Toasting Glasses - necessary or not?

FutureMrs.G, on October 12, 2015 at 9:02 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 29

FH and I started working on our registry this past weekend (the STDs were sent out and I know more than a few people who were invited like to rush out and buy the gift as soon as they get the STD so they get first pick on the registry) and we were looking at toasting glasses. At first I got caught up in how pretty the glasses were. FH gave his input too, but he was the typical guy. We got home and I continued thinking about the glasses...and then about how those pretty glasses would probably collect dust over the upcoming decades! Here's what I'm thinking: Do we spend the money on the toasting glasses, which we will use one time? Or do we use two of the pretty champagne glasses we added to the registry instead? I'm torn between wanting to have the tradition of fancy toasting glasses and not wanting to spend a silly amount of money on glasses we'll use only one time.

Definitely not necessary! FH and I registered for some gorgeous ones only because we actually like to drink champagne at home sometimes (we like feeling fancy).

I am not getting toasting glasses or the cake cutter. Our wedding is at a reception hall so I'm sure they have those things, and I just can't see ever really using them again. I have sentimental stuff already, and I will have plenty more after the wedding...I just don't see the need. And it's one more thing to remember

Well if they're on your registry someone else would buy them for you if they choose. Our cake cutter and toasting flutes were both bought off the registry in time to use them which was nice. Don't think we would have gotten them otherwise.

We purchased a full set that we will use in our home for about the same price as the toasting flutes would've been. I'm thinking about trying my hand at etching our initials on them with the armour etch cream I've seen in craft stores.

Not necessary. We bought some. But when the time came, we just ended up using the plastic ones everyone else did.

We wanted them as a keepsake so decided to get them. We got a set on David's Bridal website plus used a coupon I got from buying my dress there. We only paid $35 for a nice silver and glass set. So you don't have to get something expensive!

I hadn't thought about it, but I'm probably not going to get them, and I'm definitely not going to get the cake service set. I received the cake thing from my first wedding, and it sat in the drawer, never used again.

Not necessary, but cute to have. We ordered ours from Things Remembered and had them engraved. Will be using them every year on our anniversary. I say get them, but don't spend too much money on them. We paid $65 and that was too much.

Completely unnecessary. We just used glasses the venue provided.

Of course not necessary, but if you want them there's nothing wrong with picking up a set. We both enjoy champagne and mimosas on the weekends so ours won't be gathering dust! We bought a set of glasses as well as a serving set and two dessert plates that we'll eat our cake on from the china collection that matches the pattern on the glasses and serving set. Will we use the serving set again? Likely no, but I'll save it forever and I'm ok with it. I'll keep the plates and use them to serve some cake on for us on special occasions like anniversaries. I've even ordered a set of vintage silver forks that will be stamped "Mr" and "Mrs" with our wedding date on the handle to use! All unnecessary, but I love the details like that.

FH is divorced. The first thing he said about wedding plans was that there was no need to waste money on the glasses and cake cutting/server set. He had them for his first wedding and they were packed away for 20 years after the wedding. We are going to buy a set of inexpensive champagne glasses and decorate them using nail polish (Thanks Pinterest). The reception venue will provide the cake service.

We're just toasting with whatever drink we happen to be holding at the time in whatever cup it comes in.

If you'll never use them again or you are not toasting with champs at your wedding then it may be a waste of money. However if you think you'll use them again you can find really nice ones on Etsy or some other sites for a reasonable price. They will definitely get used in our home post wedding and I am using the toasting flutes as part of the way I am decorating the cake table and we are doing a champagne toast with cake cutting. I'm only spending about $25 for the pair and they are really cute. I am not wasting money on the cake cutting/serving utensils though.

Totally not. All that is necessary is you, your beloved, a wedding license, and officiant, everything else is icing on the cake. If you keep that in mind you will save yourself lots of stress and money.

I got some pretty ones at a thrift store and spent $2 on them - they have a pretty gold rimmed edge and are simple, and if we use them - great! If we don't, no big deal.
