To shove or not to shove?

Courtney CtoS, on July 28, 2015 at 2:14 AM Posted in Community Conversations 0 55

My late night question, then I'm off to bed Smiley smile After cutting the cake, do people still shove the piece of cake in their partners face? Out of the weddings we've been to, I think I have only seen it once. I'm not saying I'm for it or against it; I'm just curious if people don't do it anymore, or if maybe it happens more frequently in other regions, etc.

ETA: I guess I'll just add that I wouldn't be too happy if FH did it to me. I mean, how much am I spending on makeup and hair just to have sugary stuff caked (no pun intended) on me too?

I think a lot of brides here say no, including myself. I don't think you should spend $150+ on makeup to have it ruined. I won't be doing and haven't been to a wedding where it has been done.

I say yes....as long as its done gently and tastefully. It's something fun...as long as he doesn't get it in my hair. Cake cutting is usually the last thing you do for the night. It signifies to people that is ok to leave. The important pictures will be done so I won't be so worried about my makeup.

I'm going with no, because while for whatever reason the crowd seems to enjoy it, the brides always look annoyed afterward (probably because they spent all that money on makeup). If a tiny TINY bit of extra frosting happens to remain on your face, fine, but I wouldn't want any more than that.(edited for spelling)

I don't plan on doing this, but FH is a real joker so I wouldn't put it past him...

I think it's an old fashioned ritual, that I see going by the wayside.

Were doing it, but gently as another poster said. I've seen it done at weddings where it doesn't ruin the brides hair or makeup.

I already know I'm getting cake to the face. Even if he says he won't, he definitely will do it.

Besides the mess...I think it's incredibly rude. I don't fully understand how that became a tradition. We won't be doing it.

We are not. We made a deal early on that neither of us would shove cake. My dad did it to my mom, just a little but Purple icing dripped on her dress and left a stain the rest of the night. At the time she was pissed but she is fine with it now.

@JCC - do you really think your FH won't honor your request? That's just rude.

We have already agreed we are not doing this. Just seems tacky to me.

We each fed each other a nice bite, no need for smashing in the other's face. Our cake was really good in wanted to eat it, not have it all over my face. Personally I just don't see the point of the cake smash, not my thing and luckily my husband agrees with me.

FH said that if I shoved cake in his face I'd better not expect anything when we get back to the hotel room (he was kidding because his mom was going on about how cute she thinks it is). I see nothing cute about smearing cake on his face or having it smeared on mine.

I haven't seen this done in a long time. I told DH paying as much as we did for my hair and makeup it wasn't going to happen. He agreed and we just fed each other a small piece of cake.

I never understood that. I think it's gross.

I have never liked this "tradition." At my first wedding, we had agreed not to do it but my ex-husband did it anyway. I had cake up my nose and in my dress. I hadn't paid anyone to do my makeup but I still had to wash all of my makeup off. It's not a good way to start a marriage.

While we were at our cake tasting, our baker had some opinions about this. She said that back as far as biblical times when people were creating a covenant between themselves, it was customary to share food with each other. It was always to be done in a respectful manner. When celebrating the covenant of marriage, the couple shares bites of cake. When you shove it in their face, it is seen as being disrespectful of the covenant you have entered.

Now I don't know if that is true, but it gives you something to think about.

We won't be shoving cake in each other's faces. I've always hated that, plus it's a waste of delicious cake!

I've seen it where they just dab icing on each other's noses. It would make for a cute photo. FH and I still need to discuss what we want to do for cake cutting.

Hate it, always have. I'm paying a lot of money for make up, nope.

Also, I really hate when people get angry and yell at brides and grooms that refuse to do it.
