Tips for Writing Our Own Vows/ceremony

Kari, on November 26, 2019 at 7:52 AM Posted in Wedding Ceremony 1 12

We really want to write our own vows and have no idea where to start. We are hoping to have a friend officiate our wedding, but haven't decided who yet, and whoever we pick won't have much, if any, previous experience to be able to help us out. We definitely feel it is worth the extra effort to customize our ceremony and vows so they are really personal to us, but do feel a little lost as to how to go about it right now.

Any tips you have or resources you can share?

This is the website of our officiant, he has an entire page of sample vows that he's done for couples in the past. I ended up copy and pasting lines from a few different examples to make our ceremony exactly what we wanted. Hope this helps!

We wrote our own vows. I looked up samples on Goggle.and I also listened to weddings on YouTube where couples wrote their own vows. My husband watched videos on YouTube as well to get ideas.

There are lots of sites with sample ceremonies and vows out there. I would recommend picking and choosing to make something that works best for you. For your vows, you may just want to write things that you love about your partner and what you would like to promise them in your life together. You can edit once you get it all down, but that might be the best way to begin.

    What a good idea.

Did you and your husband write your vows together or did you each write separate sections that you didn't reveal to each other until your wedding? I want our vows to flow well together but also love the idea of hearing them for the first time at the ceremony.

We each wrote our vows. Neither of us had any idea what the other was going to say. We wanted our wedding to be the first time we heard them as we felt it was more special that way.

We are writing ours together. To me, it is important to discuss what we are promising each other before hand.

I looked around at templates and just wrote in the flow and words I felt I connected to and got the opinion of my officiant and see what he was comfortable with and had advice on

We wrote our own vows. What I basically did was look at other self-written vows online, pulled lines that I liked, and then basically wrote my own thing “around” those lines. Then I deleted the lines that weren’t mine. To me, that was a really great way just to help me get started!

We also didn’t hear each other’s vows until the ceremony and it was SO special. I highly recommend keeping them secret from each other until the ceremony. We did however, tell each other how long they were so we could make sure they were about the same length. We also had my brother officiate our ceremony, and we had him read both of our vows to make sure they went well together.

    That sounds perfect!

I think it would be really nice to wait until the ceremony to hear them, especially if we end up doing a first look. I really like the idea of things being saved for that special moment. I just want to make sure they "go together" especially since I am sometimes long winded and my FH is the exact opposite.
