thumbtack???

AlmostMrsB, on August 15, 2016 at 1:44 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 48

Quick question! Has anyone successfully used thumbtack to book their vendors?? I seen someone mention it the other day, took a shot & made an account. long story short I found someone on their who will do my videos & photos for a few hundred less than the original photographer I was considering. they're offering me prints, an album, & rights, they work with an assistant, provide all day coverage. they offered to only share what approve of (if anything) for promotion. it seems to good to be true! this is exactly what I was looking for & the quality of work seems awesome! SO WW has anyone used thumbtack successfully Smiley smile ETA: there***

    Hi,

I have successfully been using Thumbtack! I hired my caterer and my ceremony music.

I also did some research and both of my vendors are on The Knot and wedding wire with good reviews. Also don't be afraid to ask for references!

I've heard that thumbtack vendors use it b/c they cannot get business other ways. I would double check reviews on other sites and try to do more research on them before booking

Awesome to hear! I am SO excited haha it seems like these guys have fallen from the wedding gods & sent straight to me. I was little skeptical! they're also on WW with good reviews, just not many. I wish I knew about this site a few months ago would have saved me a lot of emails Smiley winking

My SIL was just in a wedding where the MUA had to drop out two weeks before the wedding. The bride ended up using Thumbtack to find a replacement and everyone loved her.

I used them to find my DJ. While she wasn't great, she did a good job. And, was even cheaper than my friendor was going to be.

eta: I had to find one almost last minute because I let one go when we almost cancelled. She had excellent reviews.

Thumbtack is a great resource, but it comes with a catch. A lot of vendors on Thumbtack are new/trying to get into the field. I would look at a LOT of pictures from a photographer on thumbtack and ask them to see full albums of weddings that they have put together. I booked my videographer off of Thumbtack because I was only looking for good sound quality to be able to hear the speeches on the video. I do not expect them to have amazing quality, but looking at their old footage they were good enough for what I wanted.

Make sure you have a contract with them if you decide to hire. They tend to not have a large reputation to protect since they are just starting out. You can strike gold or strike out on Thumbtack so I suggest being careful and if they sound sketch run.

Here is my take on TT, and I think I speak for all my really pro colleagues.

TT makes us pay to bid on your work. Most people who can get work on their own merit and website won't use it just for that reason.

They limit bids to the five first responders, which means you'll get the fastest answerers, not necessarily the best ones.

Most quality companies (at least in my experience) don't do both photo and video. They will do one and refer out the other, but they are upfront about it; they don't job out weddings, take a cut and use their name on everything.

When you're looking at photographers, TT or not, you need to look at an entire album, not cherry picked images on a website. I hope the pro photographers here will weigh in too, both on TT and the notion of rights because that is so misunderstood. Every photographer is going to give you limited rights, and any good one wouldn't use your photos for promo (even though they can) with out your approval or nixing of certain shots.

Photography is important, and while price is always a consideration, it's a decision that shouldn't revolve around price alone.

I found my MUA through Thumbtack. I used her for my engagements and like her work and her prices are hard to beat. I used another through MUA Thumbtack for another event and didn't find her very good at all so it really depends. You need to do your research on the vendor outside of thumbtack and really look at their portfolio of work.

They seem to be a production company, their site has a lot of commericals, weddings, events, short films etc. so I think it's safe to say they're strong point is videography. I'll definitely have to see more photos from them. their reviews are good, they just don't have many.

My wedding hasn't occurred yet, but I hired my DJ through it and he actually has faster response times to emails than any other vendor I've booked. I don't see how it's much different as far as quality of the vendors than what I've seen on Wedding Wire.

I also started looking at gutter cleaning service and HVAC routine maintenance through Thumbtack but I'm making my FH handle that. We both think it seems a lot more reliable than the word-of-mouth handy man situations we've been in.

The DJ I hired is taking on our party for less than his usual rate just because he isn't booked already for that weekend and what we're paying him isn't that much lower, I don't think. Plus he is new to Thumbtack and needs reviews on it. He is establish though on other websites.

So I haven't had any services complete yet, but I'm optimistic and found contacting vendors pretty easy and I am optimistic about it.

My friend found her photographer through it, and recommended it to me. We also found our photographer there. She had a website and lots of good reviews. She also has good reviews here on WW, just not a ton of them. She's a little newer, but honestly we couldn't afford a huge budget photographer and I'm confident after reading through her contract and her many albums she brought to meet with me, that she will work out for us!

Thanks so much guys! I think I'm going to pursue it, WITH CAUTION Smiley winking I'm so optimistic. I don't mind spending the extra money if I have to, especially when it comes to my photographer but if I can spend a little less on someone who's not as well known & the quality is there, that's great too.

Just to mix up these responses. I looked on there for a HMUA for the wedding. I decided to try her out for my engagement photos. She was 1.5 hours late, and it cut 20 minutes into my engagement photos. Her makeup was fine but I hated the color she put on my lips. I ended up putting my own lip gloss on in the car. The rest was nothing to write home about. I'm still resentful of her lateness. Needless to say, there's not way in hell I would hire her for my wedding.

I'm in the process of hiring a DOC that I found on thumbtack! I think it's a great tool. Just do your research on the vendor by googling them. I felt very comfortable with the DOC I plan on hiring when she encouraged me to check her reviews and do my research!
