Quick question! Has anyone successfully used thumbtack to book their vendors?? I seen someone mention it the other day, took a shot & made an account. long story short I found someone on their who will do my videos & photos for a few hundred less than the original photographer I was considering. they're offering me prints, an album, & rights, they work with an assistant, provide all day coverage. they offered to only share what approve of (if anything) for promotion. it seems to good to be true! this is exactly what I was looking for & the quality of work seems awesome! SO WW has anyone used thumbtack successfully Smiley smile ETA: there***

I used it to find an engagement photographer. I haven't booked anything yet but 2/3 who contacted me took great photos, one just had a better price so I think I'll go with them.

I got my engagement photographer through them. He was decent. He did it for 100 bucks and he gave us a cd with all 100 photos on it. We were able to use these photos as we wished.

He wasn't amazing... Like I've definitely seen other photographers that took fancier photos and had more experience. But for what we paid he was good and let us do what we wanted Smiley smile

I have used thumbtacks for booking a photographer for my friend's wedding and last year and I was in need of good heating and cooling contractor in New Jersey area, then got to know about NJ Central Heating & Repair from AirdexInc which are providing services in the New Jersey and New York areas. Very satisfied with both the professionals and will continue using thumbtack.

Thumbtack is great for lower end vendors. It is best to meet with your vendors before hiring them.

From a vendor standpoint, I see two major problems with sites like Thumbtack. The first would be lack of qualification. Anyone who pays the fee can list their services. Without any vetting or checking of qualifications. Now this may not be a major problem if you want your garage painted or are looking for a dog walker. But what about services that require a certain amount of skill? 2 fields that I am familiar with would be that of photographer and DJ. 2 of the more costly services that Brides look for. Anyone can go down to best buy and pickup a new Canon Rebel DSLR, or buy a laptop and a pair of speakers, and just like that, they are a professional DJ or photographer. They list on thumbtack and start bidding on events.

Which leads me to the other problem I have with thumbtack. Price wars. Now competition is usually a good thing. it promotes quality in skill and service. As long as the product or service is similar. Hyundai and Lexus are both automobiles. they perform exactly the same function, in exactly the same manner. But their prices are vastly different. Of course we all realize that even though they perform the same function, there is a huge difference in quality and performance. Now not everyone buys the Lexus. there are many who are quite happy with the Hyundai. But even they understand the reason for the price difference. But what if all the cars out there were listed in the newspaper as just cars. The brand name had no meaning because there is no brand recognition. The one thing that stands out is the price. Now thumbtack does not care who wins the price war. The more vendors bid, the more money thumbtack makes. Keep that in mind. thumbtack's goal is not to help the client and it is not to help the vendor. It is to make as much money as possible. And as more and more vendors compete over price, other qualities such as service, skill, and experience are left by the wayside in this downward spiral of lower and lower prices. One good rule to remember, if price is your overriding concern, then thumbtack is probably the first place you want to go. If quality is your overriding concern, then thumbtack is probably the last place you want to go.

Thank you for your reply. I had my wedding, thumbtack was helpful in finding vendors. I only used it to hire my videographer. Which was of good quality. However I did do extensive research before hiring them. I didn't use it to find cheaper price points, just general vendors in the area. But I can see what you mean about anyone going on there claiming to be a professional. My advice would be just to do your research, like you would before you hire any vendor.
