Thoughts on shortening wedding gown?

Salisbride, on August 23, 2016 at 2:31 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 4

My wedding dress is kind of casual, but I can't think of anything I would wear a full length white gown to. I think it would look nice as a knee length dress. I'm not sure how often I would wear a short white dress either, but it would definitely be more than a gown.

My MIL has always wanted to have a party for us in my H's home town, because she didn't get to invite all her friends to the wedding. She told me when we started planning that her own mother had this type of party for MIL and FIL after they married. And MIL wore her wedding gown to that party (in her home town). They are planning a party for us Sept. 4th.

I'm considering having my dress shortened now so I can wear it to my MIL's party, similar to how she wore her dress a second time. A full gown would be too much, but I think my dress shortened would be cute for this upcoming party. But I'm torn, I don't want to regret having my dress altered! Anyone out there have experience with this or other thoughts?

Personally, I would just get a new shorter dress. I'm not even really that sentimental, but I still don't think I could alter my original dress.

    That's a pretty dress, btw!

OK - so, I saw this done on The Hills once where LC did some stich on a long gown to shorten it, but it wasn't permanent, so when she was done wearing it short, she took the stitch out and it went back to being a long dress. Maybe that is something you could do so that your dress isn't permanently shortened if you are hesitant?

I'm quite handy with a machine and thread, so I could see myself doing that to a less fussy dress, though not to something like an embellished lace or embroidered tulle. You'll probably never wear your dress again period, so shortening it ... what real regrets could you have? That your kid lets you down gently in 30 years saying that the dress just isn't her style and she rather buy her own for her wedding?
