Thoughts on Sapphires as Engagement Stones?

So I actually have not yet proposed but am looking at rings and I really don't want to invest in a diamond ring. To me that's more money to put towards our future, but do I look cheap if I get a white sapphire??? Maybe another colored stone?

    P.S. I've been married for 16 years and together with my husband for 20 years so most of my rings are anniversary/alternate rings.

    I also have a lab created diamond that my now husband proposed to me with. You can get so much more for the same price and they have the same properties as mined diamonds so nobody can tell the difference. I love it so much that I got a lab grown blue sapphire heart ring to wear with it when I want an extra sparkle! Thoughts on Sapphires as Engagement Stones? 1
