Thoughts on Sapphires as Engagement Stones?

Jacob, on July 10, 2017 at 10:57 AM

So I actually have not yet proposed but am looking at rings and I really don't want to invest in a diamond ring. To me that's more money to put towards our future, but do I look cheap if I get a white sapphire??? Maybe another colored stone?

I have a sapphire and I love it because the diamond bores me. I love my pear sapphire. The double halo makes it pop and it was significantly less than a lower quality diamond. And I like color.

I get so many compliments on my sapphire. It's about the love and the promise not the cost of the stone.

Try Sam' s club, qvc and overstock. Their diamonds are reasonable

My FH and I didn't not explicitly talk about rings before he proposed but like PP mentioned many people we knew were getting engaged and we would ask me my opinion on their rings. Basically I wanted something super simple. I never spoke about the stone but I would have been disappointed if it wasn't a diamond. Since then I've become more open minded to other gemstones after seeing all the beautiful and unique rings here. Point is she probably already has an opinion so you have to figure out what it is.

Nancy sorry to break it to you but diamonds will eventually go out of style. They actually haven't been the "style" for very long. Gem stones have actually been the style that keeps coming back.

My FH proposed with the wedding band and then we went to pick out the ring together. That could be an option for you if you want to surprise her and still make sure she loves what she gets.

FWIW, I have a sapphire ring but it wasn't cheaper like I thought it'd be!

My husband wanted a diamond ring and I wanted a dark style - black, red, blue, or green. He decided on a black diamond.

I'd suggest taking about what kind of ring your FS would want.

There was no way I wanted a blood diamond on my hand forever so my FW shopped antique. I love sapphires on women when I see them. Not my style but I would absolutely not stick my nose up at one on someone else. You do you Jacob, just make sure your partner is into it. Congrats man!

I don't think it's cheap at all to not go with a diamond. I think it's great to be considering other life goals that you don't want to sacrifice. In my circle, as a matter of fact, large diamonds get judged for being ethically and financially irresponsible (I work in personal finance). Just today a friend showed me a picture of her wedding band and sheepishly told me the stones are diamond. I'm a moissanite girl myself. I obsessed over picking out my ring (luckily my FH had exactly zero interest and opinions, so I got to do my thing). I've never owned anything so sparkly before! I've got a few girlfriends thinking about a moissanite ring for themselves now. Embrace the gemstone!

I love my engagement ring. My fiance picked it out for me since he knew I love the color blue. I wish sapphire was my birth stone.

My FH and I were both pretty set on a diamond engagement ring, but I'm open to yellow sapphires and moissanite on my band.

I'd follow everyone else's advice and just talk to your GF. My FH and I went ring shopping and talked about styles beforehand, but he still went out on his own and picked something he thought we'd both love. It won't ruin the proposal.

A white sapphire, as pretty as it is, will not pass as a diamond. A Moissanite stone, not cheap, but always mistaken for a high quality diamond, is a better option if you're looking for a less expensive engagement ring stone.

This isn't a question for us. This is a question for the woman you intend to ask to be your legal partner until the day one of you passes away. Her opinion matters -- not ours. If you want to marry her, this is certainly a conversation you should feel comfortable having with her.

If you want a stone that looks like a diamond a sapphire won't cut it; the refractive index just isn't as high.

My first engagement ring was a pink sapphire. I don't like diamonds and everyone in my family has a colored stone in her ring - ruby, emerald, blue sapphire. My current engagement ring is morganite (pink beryl, the same stone as emerald).

If you get a non-diamond stone, I would say to avoid trying to imitate something else. Get a stone with its own beautiful properties and let it shine!

I'm more of a diamond girl and I was expecting a diamond and I would've been very upset if I didn't get one. Though after seeing a few moissanite rings I started liking them more than before, but I would still have wanted a diamond in my e-ring. Talk to your FI about this and then go shopping. Don't worry about looking cheap bc if you discuss everything with her first and she doesn't want a diamond, she won't think of you as cheap and she'll be proud of the ring you got her. But the most important thing here is that conversation. You shouldn't be moving forward with the shopping until you discuss this with her.

AK.M.: I will politely disagree. Diamonds have been around for quite some time. Gemstones will go out of style.

Take it from someone who did not like their engagement ring...ask your intended what they would prefer. You are totally right, it is a big expensive investment, and it would be a shame to spend that money on something they don't love.

Everyone on here gave great advice for diamond alternatives! And do remember...it is the sentiment that matters most, not the cost of the ring, or the ring at all!

Nancy, do a little research. Gem stones have been in style for much longer than diamonds. But you don't seem to ever back your comments up with actual facts so I'm not surprised.

@K.M. Gemstones look more like cocktail rings. This may be what the bride is looking for. Pleez, it's too early in the morning for another snarkmeister bride.
