Hi ladies! What are your real thoughts on Davids’s Bridal quality, style, price vs that of boutiques? I’m not a snob by all means but I don’t have much experience shopping for bridal gowns.

I didn’t expect this but I almost walked away with an Oleg Cassini Ball Gown for $1850 (didn’t realize it was on sale for $1450) I didn’t want to say yes yet because it was the first shop I went to and was unsure since this was such a traditional style unlike all the other gowns I’ve pinned or liked. I know I can’t afford Lazaro or Berta that’s very modern and romantic looking with the sheer bodices, plunging necklines and 3D appliqués.

My wedding planner told me to hold off on a gown and that for the $1850 price tag, I can definitely find one as glamorous with better quality at a smaller store. If it weren’t the fact that they were closing, I have a feeling I would have tried on the gown again and bought it. My planner said that David’s known for cheap prices but also pressuring brides to buy that day. She says that I’ll get more attention with champagne and won’t be pushed to buy if I go to another store.

Thoughts? Experience? My budget is $2000 but ofcourse less is good too. This dress is lovely and I can see myself walking down the aisle with it but open to new things. I also was under the assumption that David’s sold dresses at around $800.

After reading some of the horror stories on here, I’m SO glad I went the route I did.

I worked for a high end retailer when I was in college, so I can be a little picky about how I’m treated when I come in to give a store my money. Girls: DO NOT let anyone pressure you into buying a dress that you aren’t sure you want. You owe them nothing, except maybe a “thank you for your time, I have a lot to consider.” It takes no more effort on their part to be kind to you than it does to be nasty. There are beautiful dresses at every price point, and it is literally their job to be respectful of your budget, your timeline, and your taste.

I was extremely fortunate that my mom wanted to pay for my dress and offered a very generous budget for it, and I went to Lovely Bride in NYC. They couldn’t have been nicer, the only pressure I felt to buy came from me, and my stylist totally got me. In fact- they encouraged me NOT to buy on my first visit because they knew they had a dress coming in for a trunk show that I would love. They were right, I bought it, and now I’m just anxiously awaiting its arrival.

I had a $1,500 budget and I went to three different stores. I tried David's Bridal first, and it was a terrible experience. The sales woman barely even tried and I was heavily pushed into buying something or setting up another appointment even though I made it clear that I didn't want to. I then went to two other local boutiques, and had a much better experience. The first boutique had lovely dresses, but I didn't love the quality of the gowns for the price that they were. The second boutique (where I bought my dress) had tons of beautiful gowns in my budget, and they offered a 20% off discount if you bought the same day which turned a $1,700 dress into a $1,500 dress including taxes. I ended up with a Stella York dress but I also tried on Essence of Australia dresses (same designer) that were gorgeous and in budget.

I bought my dress from DB and had no issues. They were definitely salesman-like, but just bring a friend along to give a true opinion. They do have more expensive dresses ($1,000s), but my budget was around $500.

One of the last dresses I tried on was 'the one'. Luckily, it was in budget, but they did try to sell me on a $300 veil to go with it. Overall, it was a good experience and the employees were helpful and nice.

Thanks for the tip. I live in Napa Valley Aka Wine Country so maybe that’s why my wedding planner mentioned the champagne. We are famous for our Cabernet but that would be a horrible red stain if it spills. Lol

I went with a smaller boutique. I stopped by DB maybe two weeks after I was engaged and the consultant told me I was behind the ball already and that I needed to hurry up and buy my dress before June was over. And she was really rude. We exchanged words and I knew that I could not buy anything from them. I would pay to have a dress made before buying from them.

I found a smaller boutique that sold new dresses and consignment dresses. I checked all the reviews I could find and she had outstanding reviews. And she was really good at finding dresses that she didn’t have in store.

I've had nothing but positive experiences at DB and am super happy with my dress purchase. I hate to see the shaming of dress quality because if not for DB, guess what? I wouldn't have gotten the in person shopping experience AT ALL. I stretched my budget AND got help just to get to 500 dollars absolute max budget.

If not for DB, I would have had to order online and not gotten the dress trying on experience at all.

Yes, service will vary and those who had bad experience s are validated in being angry and not supporting DB. But I hate thinking people look down on the actual dresses since for some that's all they have as an option if they want to try on in store.

I had a great experience at DB. The store I went to was closing so they just took some rough measurements when I walked in the door and told me which sizes to look through. I picked probably 8 dresses to start with and my mom helped me try them on. There was like one consultant working but she was super helpful to everyone that was there - probably 10 people "rang the bell" which meant they got their dress but I didn't feel pressured to buy.

Most stores are the busiest during the weekend - if some near you have availability in the evening or you can go there during the day I think you will get the star treatment with undivided attention. Stores can't help it that everyone wants to go there on Saturday at 1pm.

I honestly felt more pressured at the smaller boutiques that I went to. I went to DB first and my consultant told me "this is your first shop don't settle try some stuff out and come back if you still want this one" I went to a few other smaller shops and when I said I was unsure if i wanted to commit to a dress they said "I guess that is fine, but just do you know if you come back we might not have the one you like" so I felt very pressured. I actually ended up going back to DB, had a different consultant but had a great experience and ended up getting my dress there!

I had an excellent DB experience! I did not feel pressured to buy anything. I tried on a ton of accessories and fell in love with some and she was 100% fine with me being like I'm not buying anything but the dress today. She listened to me and we didn't even try on more expensive dresses since I told her I wanted to start off with the cheapest first.

Anywhere that sells dresses is trying to sell. Period. They are of course going to want you to purchase there. I've heard stories about smaller boutiques putting the pressure on to buy that day as well.

My dress is from a small boutique that only carries eastern european designers and my dress was $865. It was a sample gown, I believe full price it would have been around $1,200. My budget was also $2k. I never went to DB because its so popular and I wanted something different. I'd shop around still.

Hi Cheryl. My major issue with David’s is that they didn’t have a selection of sizes in the dresses I wanted to try on. My sales girls were awesome. So sweet and tried very hard, but their sizes were either a 6 to 8 or an 18 to 24. In bridal wear I am probably a 10-12. They said I would have to pay for the dress if I wanted to try it on in a different size. Ummmm if you stock the dress, why won’t you have more sizes to try on?? But I didn’t have the best experience in the smaller shops I went to either. I’m still looking. The dress you are in looks amazing though. 😊

DB was the only place I went to. The experience was ok. The main shopper had a bit of an attitude, because I kept asking to try on more dresses, but the little girl who helped me into those gowns was just precious. I, too almost walked out of there paying the sticker price of $1458 for an Oleg Cassini gown. My MOH talked me out of it. I went home and started searching online.
I found the exact dress in my size, unaltered on ebay! I was hestitant, but then went for it. I ended up paying a little over $400 with shipping. The dress came, it was beautiful, it fit and still had the $1458 tag on it.
Im now having some alterations done.
So for me DB worked out well.

What? Pay to try on your size? Most bridal shops will only carry a size 8 or 10 I thought. Never thought they would charge you to try a size. That dress is amazing but I don’t have anything to compare it to other than the other David’s dresses. I believe that’s as high of price as they go at that store to. Her sales tactic almost worked. She had me try a $500 dress on that was pretty but next to the Oleg Cassini dress, it didn’t sparkle as much and the fabric was more rough and not as opulent as the one I liked.

I’m also looking at preowned Dresses. I’m surprised at the amount of New with tags unaltered dresses others have and they’re Expensive. That’s great to hear you found a gem at eBay. I’m scared I’m going to get sold a fake or damaged dress. I already got fooled by a girl whose actual photo does not look like the dress on the stock model photo.

I went with my FSIL to DB when she was looking for a dress and it was a terrible experience, so when I went looking I didn't even bother.
I called boutiques to get a feel for thier prices and found one that fit. When I went I had the shop to myself, all but that last 10 min but my appt went long. I had a personalized experience and ended up finding my dream dress. When I picked up my dress they had written me a personal note with details I had told my consultant. I would go back there in a heart beat!

Of course they do that. 🤨 They suck you in that way. My venue did that with the ceremony/reception area and I’m sad to say, it totally worked. I couldn’t imagine having it anywhere other than the first place they showed us. At least we got a discount on the room because it’s a Sunday. I wish you all the luck in finding your prefect dress ❤️

I didn't have a great experoence at DB. I went to a boutique a few months later and it was the best and found my dress there. I really think it depends on the person and their style. I had no idea what i liked even after looking at dresses online.
