Things you love and hate about djs

What makes you enjoy a dj and what are your pet peeves that are non negotiable hard passes?


For example, we love how they read the crowd and switch up to whatever the crowd responds to that you can’t do with a DIY playlist. And flexibility in general.
What we hate is the cheese where they insist that if they are not loud and obnoxious that people are not able to enjoy themselves. A couple local djs that immediately got scratched from the list were loud and insisting that guests won’t have a good time without Monday Night Football host-style reception introductions and MC’ing announcements all night that we don’t want.

    For me, like you said a DJ that knows how to read a room. It’s funny because when we met our DJ he explained the importance of being an MC. He mentioned how so many people think getting a laptop makes them a DJ, but you have to be a MC first. He also told us that this is a wedding reception and not a club, so he will not be doing a bunch of mixing to the songs every 1 minute he will let the songs play. I like that because it gives us and the guest the opportunity to enjoy the music.

    I think it’s important to have a DJ who can read the room and adjust accordingly. I tried to control the music played but my DJ pretty much said “Sis sit down I got this!” And boy did he ever. I loved that he played a diversity of music and didn’t stop until 2 am!

    I have never had a good experience with DJs. They're always way too loud and I don't usually enjoy the music that I play. What I request, often rock, usually isn't available to them.

    Something I absolutely ADORE about the DJ we booked is that he asked us about how we felt about surprises. I never thought about that as something a DJ would handle, but considering they're the one with the mic, it makes a lot of sense. Some people love surprises, but others might not (or they have specific guests whose "surprise" would be really awful), so gauging where the couple stands on that was something I was really impressed with.

    When we had our consult they were also super understanding about what kind of vibe we wanted for the different parts of the reception and also really got into the more personal touches we wanted.
