The Journey Begins: Making My Dress!

Tonight I begin a long Journey, the ultimate DYI: My dress! I’m excited and a little anxious (as I often am before a big sewing project) but I’ve procrastinated enough! Well, here goes!

Last night’s progress. I drafted the pattern for the overskirt, got it cut out and pleated. It’s hanging a little funky because it needs trimmed up and all the panels sewn together at the side and back seams. I think I’ll also need to adjust the hoops I’m the petticoat a bit.

More progress on my dress! Not a lot of visible progress to the casual viewer, as a lot of today’s work was internal structure and tailoring. Pleats were completed and all seams were finished up. It is not looking and behaving more like a dress as opposed to panels of fabric.

Oh! I almost forgot one of my favorite parts; a major perk of self-creation that many brides only dream of: pockets! I was even able to hide them entirely within the pleats.

WOW! You have more balls than me..I could never do that. Not only because I'd freak out I'd mess it up but my sewing skills only go as far as heming my pants cause I'm so short, and making pillows/blankets.

Good luck! I can't wait to see the finished product.

I never even thought about making my own dress. Possibly because it's been over 25 years since I sewed a dress. These days I'm down to buttons and repairing my FSD's stuffed animals. Enjoy this. You'll get exactly what you want!

Making my own wedding dress was a dream of mine (however, I have little to no sewing skills and it would be waaaaaaaayyy too difficult for me haha). But the thought of someone making their own dress is so amazing and special. C: I wish you luck on it, and post photos of your progress! I'm sure it will be absolutely stunning!

Well, the dress is coming along slowly but surely. The base skirt and overskirt are both put together for the most part. Now that I've had a seamstress friend help me mark the hem, the rest of the work on the skirts should move pretty smoothly. The next step is to make the lace overlays for the base skirt.
As a theatre girl, I can't resist being dramatic (especially to overcompensate for a disheveled appearance)The Journey Begins: Making My Dress! 9Base Skirt and Overskirt TogetherThe Journey Begins: Making My Dress! 10

My sewing skills end at minor alterations and Halloween costumes so I’m very impressed! Can’t wait to see how it turns out!!
