THE GREAT CAKE DEBATE! (To smash or not to smash)

Future Mrs.Whitaker, on July 24, 2014 at 8:58 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 57

So, saw this on my morning scroll through facebook. The groom actually made the bride bleed because he hit her with the cake topper...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Tq_NdZGu4A

So then, someone posted this...

http://www.kevinathompson.com/how-i-predict-divorce-based-on-the-wedding-cake/

We will probably be smashing just a little bit because FH is like that...but I told him if it gets in my hair or on my dress....he's dead.

No smashing for us.... my mother has always found it so disrespectful and as I've gotten older I find myself agreeing with her.

Besides, after spending all that money on hair and makeup if it gets messed up by cake I'll be so mad lol.

Nope, not for us. He knows how I am with my makeup and he wouldn't have dared. You are going to get mixed reviews on this. I thinks it's silly and disrespectful, but a lot of people think it's cute.

I dont care either way, but we arent. I only feel its disrespectful when one person's wishes are blatantly ignored on the matter.

Ex: FH's father told his mother when they got married, that he didn't want her to smash the cake in his face. She did it anyway and he was VERY upset. That is disrespectful.

ETA: I Just watched that video. I would be livid if FH threw the whole damn tier at me!

FH is actually the one who decided he didn't want to smash cake in each other's faces (and he's not even paying for hair/makeup). I was going to suggest it anyways because I really don't want to have to fix my hair & makeup afterwards; that seems like such a waste of money. And I think it's much cuter to just feed each other lovingly; it'll make the crowd ooh-and-aah. =)

FH puts food on my face whenever he gets an opportunity.

Like last night, we went to a steak house for his birthday and FMIL brought a cake. He took some of the icing and put it on my nose and whispered "prepare yourself...9 days" in my ear.

I think it's hilarious when the bride and groom do that to each other. I guarantee you my FH will do it because it is hilarious and he loves putting food in my face any way to lighten things up. And plus, I will probably not be wearing a lot of makeup to begin with so it's ok with me. But he will die if it gets on my dress or in my hair. Lol

Haha I read that article about smashing cake predicting divorce ... seems a bit silly. We won't be smashing each other in the face with cake lol. While we love to joke around, I guess I really don't think the cake smash is all that funny. It also seems so '90s to me lol... haven't seen it done in a wedding since then, I guess.

No cake smashing for us. So rude and not funny at all. Most onlookers just cringe when it happens!

Nope nope nope. I bought cute forks with the date on them, actually FMIL gave them to us for Christmas. I never understand why the bride and groom use their fingers at weddings. You wouldn't eat birthday cake with your hands!

I think the smashing is gross and can be very disrespectful.

Ok the couple in the video is just disgusting. That is not love. They both ruined their cake for them and their guests, a cake that didn't look cheap, and he ruined her dress. I would be LIVID if FH tried that. But he knows that I wouldn't appreciated it and we respect each other. We have said that we will not smash our cake. I could see a little playful and cute frosting on the nose but a full smash is just not our style.

No. I am spending money to get my makeup done, which I never ever ever do. Sooooo no. Plus, it seems kindof childish to me, and while FH and I are goofballs, food on each others faces is not our idea of fun Smiley winking

We got some really cute personalized cake forks which I can't wait to use!

    @Samantha- I am with you 100% there.

I agree with Truffle...I only think its disrespectful if one person specifically says "don't do it"

I really do not understand how this is disrespectful, I just think it's silly. I plan on doing the cake smashing. Yes, it's a lot of money being spent on make-up and what-not, but I intend on having fun and being silly.
