Temporary engagement rings..thoughts?

Kate, on September 19, 2010 at 1:47 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 29

Hey there! I'm brand new to the forums. Smiley smile

My BF and I plan on getting engaged on our anniversary in November. We've already gone ring shopping and I fell in love with a ring at Robbins Bros for $1400. At the time, we figured he'd be able to start a down payment on it soon, or maybe even buy it all at once, once he gets a big paycheck from his job that he's been waiting for. Now it looks like once he gets that paycheck, he'll have too many things to pay off, and won't be able to afford the ring by Nov. Now I know the ring isn't the important part, it's the proposal, but I would still love to have something to wear in the meantime. Smiley smile

I found two rings at this great antique shop for only $40 each, and they're cool, different, and fit my finger (no worries about having to get it sized!). We decided he could get one of those when he proposes, and give me the real one from RB later, which is fine by me. Has anyone else gone through this? What are your thoughts on temporary engagement rin

    Welcome to WW!

As you say, the ring isn't really important--but it's nice to have the symbol. If you're happy wearing a placeholder for awhile, why not? (Many people get dummy e-rings for traveling and whatnot anyway.)

Sure why not. You may find that the "temporary" one ends up being the cheaper though as sentiment means more than the price - that's what happened to my sister - her's was made by her FH from a bar of silver, in his sister's stainglass workshop.

    Thanks, glad to be here!

Good, that makes me feel better! The rings I chose are cool, and nothing like engagement rings.. more like fun, vintage cocktail rings.. but I figure, it's up to me, so I shouldn't care what other people think. Plus getting the real one from RB later would be something fun to look forward to, as well!

I have a temporary ring too. Smiley smile I'm eventually going to eventually get it remade by someone in white gold/diamond. Mine is Sterling silver/CZ right now. I haven't decided if I just want a new ring for the wedding and to get my ring remade on our anniversary or what though. it's a really hard decision. I plan on keeping my ring he proposed with in our fire safe after I get a new ring or get my old one remade.

My actual e-ring doesn't look like most people's idea of an engagement ring. :-) The center stone is a heart-shaped ruby, flanked by two smaller white topazes.

That's so pretty! Seeing this really helps me feel more confident in our new decision to get the temp. When I take pictures today, I will post them. I'd love to get some opinions!

OctoberBride - It sounds to me like your idea is a good one.. but I do like the idea of having your ring re-made for your wedding.. and just getting a pretty band for your anniversary to add to the wedding ring Smiley smile

Thank you! I LOVE my e-ring--DS picked it out himself, except he wasn't sure if he should get the ruby or the pink sapphire, so he checked with me before buying. I don't think he realized how light pink sapphires generally are; I knew that the ruby would be a bolder color, more to my preference. He basically found it, though, and people always comment on how well it suits me. That's the important thing--that you're happy with it. :-)

Yes exactly! And we're both very creative people, so I don't think people would be weirded out seeing my temporary ring.. they both suit me perfectly, and I'd be happy with either one of them.

@Jenna F. welcome to WW and there is nothing wrong with that. i actually made my FH take back the huge expensive ring he bought me and picked out my beautiful simple $250 ring that i love so much. i'm not really into all that, so i got the ring i wanted and all the love with it

Welcome to WW! FH and I didn't have an engagement ring when he proposed last november due to the same kind of financial situation. He had given me a beautiful ring that summer though, so he used that as the symbol of a new ring to come. lol. it only took us till christmas to get my actual engagement ring so I didn't have to wait very long. the proposal couldn't have been anymore perfect to me with or without it Smiley smile

I had a $10 ring for like four months before I got the real deal, but to me it wasn't a "pre-engagement ring", just a place-holder. We were engaged, and really it feels like you are, too! I say do it. I also just recently got FH an engagement ring. I don't even want to tell you how cheap it was.

Alot of people do a temporary engagement ring or a fake one just in the meanwhile since rings are so expensive you can even get a cheapo one at walmart SS and they look great!

Thank you so much for your opinions. I went back to the store today and looked at the rings again. This picture doesn't do them justice.. I felt like a nerd standing there trying to take pictures while the lady who worked there didn't seem very excited, but oh well! If you see the two rows of rings, the ones I love are the ones in the front row. The one on the left screams vintage (I love the light blue in the center!) and the one on the right is a little more modern.. I like the shape of it.

The ring I want from RB (the super expensive one) looks like this - http://www.robbinsbrothers.com/Engagement-Rings/Wedding-Set/Robbins-Brothers-i24128.ring

Huge difference as you can see! But I figure if I'm getting a place-holder, I might as well get something fun and unexpected, right? Smiley smile

Honey I don't even have a ring yet we went shopping twice already & what I want cost a few thousands but i'm getting what i want in 3months so i don't care if i don't have a ring on my finger. We've set our date & we're planning when I get the ring I get it. When his Unle asked why I didn't have a ring he showed him a picture of it & said u can get a close up x-mas LOL

Ring in such cases, rather a symbol of your relationship, and in this case, no matter how much it costs. For my custom essay think this topic is useful

Ok weird on the last comment.. As a person who isn't really into jewelry, I can tell you my FH got my engagement ring on ebay.. Before you judge/criticize, they actually have a HUGE selection of rings (estate sales, pawn shops, actual jewelers) lol my ring is 3/4 of a carat and is soooo beautiful. It's an antique deco ring that's older than my grandmother and that's why i love my ring. It only cost about $400 bucks too Smiley smile (i picked it out personally) seriously, it sounds weird as hell, but check out ebay or amazon.. as long as you find a someone that's willing to back up the ring then go for it!

I think that's cool! I wore a "promise ring" as we called it, for about a year... to get used to the feeling of a ring on that finger Smiley winking Mine came from James Avery. A simple sterling silver band with an aquamarine in the center. It was about $50.

What are the rings you are looking at made of? I know I shouldn't be "raining on your parade", just make sure your finger won't turn green or anything! Smiley smile
