tea light/ votives break glass

no1, on October 1, 2015 at 3:02 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 20

So after working on my centerpieces and ideas for a couple hours my fiance slightly freaks out saying that the glass I am putting my candle in is too thin and that I can put candles in glass cups and that the glass will crack and the whole world will end.... oky not exactly what he said but you get the point lol. Its honestly not much thiner than a regular votives candle holde (its a stemless wine glass)... has anyone had experince with this? Did it work? did it break?

I really dont want to spend 2-5 dollars a piece for somthing I like just as much....

Why does he think the glass will break? Is it because it's hanging from the ceiling?

LMFAOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO i'm sorry but Jeanne's comment was hilarious!!!!

I don't think they will break but maybe you should keep one on for a few hours at home to test them out

If you're (or he...lol) super worried about it, you can use flameless candles! That's what we did, and no one even knew the difference...lol

I honestly think he's just being paranoid. But i think I am going to do a test run and leave it burning for a few hours.

@SoontobeJB how did you do that... the only thing I havnt tried is editing it so its upside down on my desk top...

If the glass is not tempered, it can break from the heat -- especially when the flame gets really low.

You could put a bit of water in the bottom -- maybe even dye it one of your colors.

Or use the flameless (battery-powered) candles.

Just test it and let the candle run all the way down.

Did you get holders that specify candle use?

Sorry, couldn't help it. As long as you're using something that's actually made for candles, it won't break. It might get a little warm but it won't break.

I'd test it too. I actually ordered regular votive glass holders off Amazon because I have a candle obsession problem and I was sitting on the couch yesterday, heard the sound of glass breaking, and found the broken votive holder.

I wouldn't think you would have a problem but I do agree doing a test run is your best bet.

I've seen it happen. No idea what type of Holger it was, but it shattered. Loud too! Flameless candles are a better choice, regardless. Both for safety and effectiveness, IMO.

I'm glad it didn't break. Something to remember is make sure any flowers or paper will not be near the flame. I have seen flowers start to smolder and smoke when they were an inch or more away from the flame. I always recommend using high quality flameless candles for this.

I'm pretty sure that it isn't extreme temperatures that shatter glass; it's a rapid shift from one temperature to another. So unless you plan on refrigerating them before you put the candles in them, you should be fine.
