I don't think you can write off wedding expenses...at all.

When I went with my mom to get our taxes done I asked our tax lady about all of this since FH will be paying for it all as of now, the only thing wedding wise that you could claim would be if you are getting married at a church and make a donation to the church. I know that you can claim charitable donations, any church donations or any dotations that you make to a thrift store or anything like that you can claim, but you have to have proof, like for the church you would need to get a copy of the check you wrote to the church from your bank, and donations to a thrift store you have to have reciepts that give totals of how much you donated. That's all that I know of that you can claim.

I did taxes for 6 years. You cannot claim anything wedding related as a tax deductible expense. The only exception to this is if you plan to marry in a church and instead of renting it they only ask for a donation. This donation is tax deductible.

    Sorry - wish we could.

I'm going to ask a similar question: If we donate our centerpieces to a local non-profit, can I write those expenses off? What is the depreciation of flower arrangements 24 hours later? 50%? 25%?

Just agreeing with what the other ladies have said. The only thing deductible would possibly be a donation to the church or any other donations you might make. If the fee for the church is over $250, make sure you get a letter confirming the donation. Also if you donate other items after the wedding, like your dress or decorations be sure to get receipts for those donations, with values from the place, like goodwill, that you're donating them to. However this will only be worthwhile if you itemize your deductions, which will only be useful if you have deductions exceeding $11,600, this includes real estate taxes, mortgage interest, charitable contributions and some other items. If you've been filing a 1040EZ you probably won't be able to itemize unless you buy a house or your FS has been itemizing in excess of the $11,600.

What about flowers? Our venue is very near a rehab facility and we plan on donating the centerpeices, can they be tax deductable too?

@Mary - you probably wouldn't be able to get deduct a donation of live flowers unless it was to an organization that got immediate use for them. If they were able to use the for a function the day after your wedding, you probably could, but you might be hard pressed to find a place that would be able to use them while they still retained value to the organization.

@Future KH - they may be in that situation, where they were able to get use from them. You would want to get a receipt from the center, showing they are a 501(c)(3) as well as a valuation of the donation.

But once again this only helps if you are able to itemize deductions.

How I wish, How I wish they were... unfortunately like the other ladies said you can't do that unless it's a donation. That would be nice if we could, wouldn't it? hahah

Wait now... if you become a wedding planner you could more than likely write off wedding expenses. Not all hope is lost!

I agree with all the other ladies. The only thing claimable is donations and only if you receive a Charitable Donation Receipt, including the name of the Charity, donation amount and date.

This is an old WW post but I found this article online and thought maybe it could help clear some things up. Of course, not all State taxes are the same and you should definitely check with your accountant to be sure.
