Tattoo Cover Up??

EdieKristen, on July 12, 2011 at 7:09 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 22

My good friend recently got engaged and I am going to be a bridesmaid for her in 2013. I haven't brought up the subject to her yet, but I was going to ask if she preferred that I cover my tattoos. By the end of next year, both of my shoulders that are already partially done will be completely covered (this is NOT an option to wait on because I want them finished for MY wedding pictures, in which they will not be covered) and I have a few on my upper back as well. Obviously, she knows they exist and I know it's considered "tacky" to ask a girl to be your bridesmaid and then expect her to cover up existing work, but I fear that she wouldn't just not ask me because of them but she still might not really prefer to have them in her pictures. Or, perhaps her family members might not like it. Either way, I honestly wouldn’t care and I love her and want her day to be perfect so I would be MORE THAN happy to cover them up for her if she wanted me to.

I’m just wondering, does anyone have any actual experience successfully covering tattoos and what did you use? Concealer w/ powder just doesn’t work that well and they still show through faintly, which then just looks weird… And I was told by a makeup artist at a bridal show that airbrushing would NOT effectively cover my tattoos. I’m not even sure yet if she will care or not, but I am at least going to offer to do so, and I would like to be able to follow up on my promise if need be.

I've tried some makeup (I do a lot of horror special fx makeup for fun and have a lot of this type of makeup in various colors) and it's basically the same as the concealer- it works a little, but isn't seamless and some color still shows through.

I've heard about http://cm-beauty.com/covermark_kits_tattoo.htm but I haven't met anyone who has actually tried it personally, and a lot of times products claim that they work but then they really don't! Smiley sad

Try Dermablend (my co-worker wanted to cover a few tattoos that were inappropriate for work and she used it and it worked great!), and I think Kat VonD has a line @ Sephora as well.

Airbrushing is the best way and the least messy. Make up rubs off, but the airbushing looks natura and lasts a long time.

Have a professional MUA do it - one who has done it before. Ask to see before and after photos. Some prefer the Dermablend, others prefer to airbrush. It depends on the amount to cover, the location, the colour of it, etc. You might also consider wearing a shawl or pashmina, if the bride thinks that's a good idea. Either way, you really need to talk frankly with the bride about this and get her take on it. She might not care at all!

After many years of makeup experience and many test and fails at tattoo covering, I have found that products such as Dermablend, Kat von D, Sephora, etc. are all great to cover for a photoshoot or short periods of time but lack the lasting ability needed for weddings. Your body heat will cause these products to soften and melt off, thereby rubbing and smearing on clothes.

The only way to properly cover a tattoo for a full day is by hiring a makeup artist skilled in tattoo cover. You should also expect to pay appropriately for this service as it does require a good amount of time, quality professional grade products and a ton of patience.

Also, it's best to note that consumption of alcohol in the days preceding the event will also have a negative effect on the tattoo covering. The alcohol you consume is released through the skin and will counteract with the makeup possibly causing it to come off.

Could you possibly just wear a little jacket or shawl to cover them for her ceremony and pictures? I bought a coverup for my son to cover the tatts on his hand for interviews and while it works pretty good it is time consuming to make it look clean and not cakey... If you plan to use makeup I'd have a MUA do it for you.

As a bride with a tattoo, I had a professional MUA cover my tattoo. Just know that it does NOT work against flashes. You can tell I have a tattoo in many of my wedding pictures (example) So just giving you a fair warning.

You can see my tattoo under my hair and in between my shoulder blades.

I don't know anything about the make up to cover up tatoos, but I will say yay for you... being proactive and responsible about your role in your friends wedding.

We hear alot of BM horror stories around here, so this is refreshing.

If a makeup artist is not experienced or knowledgeable about tattoo cover, it will show through. I've learned through trial and error the best way to cover a tattoo and make it last. The products I use can not be removed easily. It requires rubbing alcohol to remove it and preferably 99% rubbing alcohol. The outline and black color is the most difficult to cover. This photo below has not been retouched and reflects the actual image from the camera and flash.

2nd to what Stephanie said! I use alcohol-based makeup that wears beautifully and there is no way anything is showing through on camera.

This is definitely something I would leave to the pros, particularly if you have LOTS to cover up. The wrong products will transfer and wear off and get all over the place and just generally drive you crazy on a day when you don't want to be thinking about it.

And PS - the Kat Von D stuff at Sephora didn't do a darn thing when I played with it - and I believe was on the pricey side to boot. Even for just a photoshoot, there are many things that are cheaper and far more effective. For a wedding or special event, though, airbrushing is absolutely the way to go.

Thank you, ladies!!! I will definitely keep looking for a makeup artist that is experienced in airbrushing cover up then, if my friend decides she would like me to do so. And thanks Mrs Lesenski Smiley smile I guess just being a bride to be helps me understand better how much you want the day to be perfect and if her idea of perfect doesn't include a tattooed bridesmaid, then I am perfectly fine with that Smiley smile

I have a tattoo that I cover with Revlon Colorstay foundation. I let it dry after putting it on then hit with a little translucent powder; and believe, it doesn't come off!

Hi Edith, I'm not sure where your friend is getting married, but I'm in Florida and do travel througout the country. I also know many makeup artists all over, so if you need referrals, let me know.

If your friend doesn't mind the tattoos, then I wouldn't bother with covering it.

Ok, two options... one, wear a shawl or bolero (I did this for my friend's wedding) or two, have it professionally done... basically any makeup will wear off, and smudge..

    good luck!
