Taking Time off For the Wedding

We are going on our honeymoon right after the wedding for two weeks. Some of this time I'm taking off will be unpaid.

How much time did you take off before the wedding? Was it long enough? Do you wish you had taken more time off?

Thanks for all the responses! Definitely helpful to see that most people have taken off or plan to take off the three days before like I was thinking.

@Jade, no worries. That was a helpful response. FH has a similar set up with his company where he has a ton of days like that too. You're also in the TV industry right?

@Rikki L, good to know. Your response is still making me consider taking the whole week off. A little afraid of going stir crazy like MrJonesandme said though.

I am also taking Wed-Fri before the wedding. We are leaving Sunday, the day after our wedding, for our week-long honeymoon. And the Monday that we get back is Memorial Day. So we'll get an extra day off, to settle in. Smiley winking

FH is taking the day of the RD off and I have the whole week off, as I am a teacher and have summer break.

Our wedding is on a Friday evening. FH is taking Thursday, Friday, and the week following the wedding off of work. I am contemplating taking the full week-of and the week after the wedding off for the honeymoon. We're still working out the details for the honeymoon, so that's flexible. I haven't spoken to my supervisor yet, but I don't think they will have any issues with me taking the time off; I'm just concerned about the amount of work that is going to pile up while I'm out!

We only took off Friday but we didn't have any DIY to finish. I got my nails done, husband picked up his suit, we did a couple of errands, and finished packing up stuff to take to the venue that night. I would think most brides wouldn't need more than Thursday and Friday.

I took Tuesday through Friday off before my wedding, which was on a Friday. Then I took the week after off for our honeymoon. We did our honeymoon Sunday to Sunday. And we both had the Monday, the day after we got back off because it was Memorial Day.

I get lots of PTO, but my wedding was also a really busy time of year. I am glad that I worked one day the week my wedding. It allowed me to get work stuff in order before my time off, so I could fully focus on wedding and honeymoon. I think I ended up with the prefect balance of time off, enough time to finish pre-wedding projects, get my nails, waxing, etc done, but not too much time away from the office.

I'm so glad you asked this, we have been thinking about how we are going to do this to. I would love to take a whole two weeks off, but I am a long term contractor with no benefits. So, it would all be unpaid. FH is currently a contractor as well, but he is likely about to get a permanent position at his current contract. So, if he gets vacation pay, we could consider the two weeks.

ANYWAY, to actually answer your question, I'm thinking the Wednesday before would probably be early enough if you are worried about the money!

I was off Tuesday-Friday the week of my wedding and 2 weeks after my wedding. I'll admit I was pretty useless that Monday.

Being a teacher, it's super impossible to have lots of time off in the middle of the school year. I have about 20 days of sick leave built up, but only two personal days per year to do with what I please. So I'm taking the Friday before and the Monday after. I still haven't decided if it's going to be MORE stressful to have those days off and have to plan for my students rather than having to be at school and worrying about everything wedding related!

Our honeymoon is going to happen off and on throughout the next year; we'll take an extended weekend and spend time at a family lakehouse during my spring break, then we plan on taking a road trip during the summer to visit friends and see some sights in California. I'm so excited to be able to spoil ourselves with multiple little trips here and there Smiley smile

I'm having a destination wedding on a cruise. Ceremony being on departure day, so I'm taking off three days prior to my departure, the 7 days of the cruise, and One day after. I was told to take at least a day before and after.

@RJmargo- Yes I'm in TV. Its definitely helpful to work for a company with a generous PTO policy. I would also recommend just talking to your boss from now, they might be able to work with you and be more flexible. you never know!

I took off the Thursday and Friday before the wedding so I could do the last minute stuff. I also took the Monday after the wedding off. Mini-moon was two weeks later.

Seems like three days off before the wedding has worked pretty well for most, so that's probably what I'll ask for as well. Thanks for all the advice!

@Jade, yeah it's definitely great for FH too. I think it's a pretty popular thing at the big corporations. I'm on the tv editing side, so it's more project to project, so they tend to be pretty flexible. ETA: It's more about if three days is enough, which it seems like it should be from everyone's responses.

Wow, I am getting anxiety reading all of these. I am only taking off the Friday before the wedding. We aren't taking our honeymoon until the following week (Sat - Fri rates were much cheaper!) so I will be going back to work the Monday after and working all week. I will then take off the week after that for our honeymoon. I wasn't even sure if I really needed the Friday before off since I don't know what I will be doing that day. FH is working a 1/2 day and I'm really not doing much pampering. Is everyone that is taking off the whole week doing a lot of DIY projects for the wedding? I'm just wondering what I am missing that I need that time off for???

I had a week off work. We went to the beach for the whole week. We got down there Sunday, the wedding was on Thursday, left the Sunday after. We also didn't go on a honeymoon. If I was you, I wouldn't take a ton of unpaid leave. Do you really need that much time before the wedding off? I pretty much had everything organized. If I would have had a local wedding, I probably would have only taken like a day and a half before off.

Since my wedding is on 09/16/16 (Friday) I;m taking half day wed, then Thur-Friday. We are leaving after the wedding (leaving on sat) and coming back home a week later. Where I work they give us 4.5 hours of PTO for every 80 hours that we work since we get payed bi-weekly Smiley smile

@VMD, good point. I think I'm going to stick with the three days off before as opposed to the whole week. I'm planning to be pretty organized, so in theory, if I stay that way, that should be enough time. That way I'm only taking 2.5 weeks off rather than a full three weeks for wedding and honeymoon. At least a week of it will be PTO and Memorial Day is also PTO. So it would only really be about a week unpaid, which it's too bad.

I am planning on taking the week before the wedding off as well as two weeks after. We don't have a honeymoon booked yet but we are planning to leave shortly after our wedding. I probably won't need the week off before the wedding, but I know I will feel a lot less stressed having that time off.
