I want a taco bar at my wedding. my MIL thinks its fine but also thinks we need other choices for people that dont want tacos. this is what she suggested....

appetizers

spinach and artichoke dip, fruit, cheese & crackers, bbq meatballs.

meats

fried chicken, roast beef

sides

chopped salad, veggie pasta salad, and a baked potato bar.

too much? i dont really think we need all the extra food. i was thinking a taco bar would be fine on its own, (ETA: and appetizers) there would be a lot of options for the taco bar, so if someone doesnt want tacos they could make a salad, or just eat the meat by its self. maybe a taco bar and extra appetizers? im not sure.

Tacos sound like a great idea for an end of the night snack, but I really wouldn't want to eat one in a cocktail gown, so I'm glad it's not your only menu item.

In answer to your thread title, "taco bar enough food?" No. However, you have other substantial meats and carbs on the menu, so I think the tacos are just an addition to an otherwise balanced menu.

On one of the "Four Weddings" shows a couple had a taco bar; I can't remember what kind of food they served at the cocktail hour,if any? I do know they got the lowest score of the show and one of the lowest I've ever seen on 4W.

If you do a taco bar, I would not add a potato bar.

You can carry off a taco bar, if you provide enough choices.

As others have said, not everyone will want tacos. So, you should have a few meat/fish opens (the typical taco beef, shredded chicken, shrimp). Also enough sides and accompaniments....lettuce, tomatoes, a few different types of cheeses, salsa, pico de gallo, beans (I prefer black beans not refried, so perhaps a couple of different types of beans), rice, guacamole or sliced avocado, sliced olives, sour cream, hard and soft tortillas (both corn and flour).

I would not add fried chicken, as you FMIL suggested. Doing shredded chicken would be fine.

Also, when doing beans, I would suggest having them made vegetarian style (aka, no chicken or beef broth used in them, nor lard.)

Give your guests the option to make a taco of three as well as a salad out of the selection.

I never eat this kind of food (not that I do not like it) and damn it, now I am starving. Ha ha!

Yep it's your wedding, do EXACTLY what you want without considering anyone else because IT"S YOUR DAY.

Just having a taco bar is too skimpy, too limited, and though it's hard to believe not everyone likes tacos.

    Her suggestions are spot on.

Margo, it ceases to be YOUR day when you invite guests.

I don't think tacos only is enough. There needs to be variety. Your FMIL is correct, there needs to be more options.

Thank you everyone for the responses. We are self catering everything except the taco meat. Were getting the meat from a small mexican restaurant. I will have to think about my options and talk to my FMIL again about a menu and discuss some different options.

Don't self cater. That is your only option.

Margo is incorrect. It's not "your day" when you involve guests.

Omg don't self-cater. How are you keeping hot foods hot and cold foods cold?

Where are you having this? If it's a venue, do they allow you to bring in food not from a licensed caterer? Not a good idea to do it yourself the liability is really huge.

I'm waiting for the "you're all so rude" comment...

Letti is right, most venues will not allow you to self cater...

    @HisBeauty,

My insurance would cancel me in a heartbeat if I allowed this.

Don't self cater guacamole and dairy! That's seriously not okay. And with something like tacos, the potential for cross-contamination is so high.

Get a caterer, no matter what else you do.

I think it is fine if you think it works for the crowd. As long as there is plenty for 2nds/3rds and bas all the fixings (e.g. cheese, sour cream, etc)

Okay so I would highly recommend not having just a taco bar. It does depend on your guests and how many guests you're having, but do you know what all your guests dietary restrictions are? I couldn't eat at your wedding because I don't eat meat and can't have anything spicy due to stomach issues I have. You can do what you want for your wedding, but I wouldn't attend a wedding if I knew there would be nothing available that I could eat so I hope you let your guests know. Personally, I think your MIL is absolutely right suggesting that you at the very least have some different appetizers. Doing just tacos is selfish and inconsiderate of the guests. (Unless you are 100% sure every single guest can and will eat the tacos - which would be very surprising)

Also self catering is a huge NO. Have you ever been to a place like chipotle, qdoba, or bubbakoos burritos... they have a whole team of people who put together the tacos and the people who add the meat are never the same as those who add the toppings because of cross contamination. There are so many health requirements that you have to consider, as others have mentioned. How wonderful would you feel if people got sick from the food at your wedding? I mean seriously think of others besides yourself!

The ceremony is for you and your husband to get married. The reception afterwards is for your guests to celebrate and for you to thank them for attending. It's a party, yes, but it's not all about you. Stop being selfish!

I'm doing this for my rehearsal and had the same fears. I think I'm just getting a few extra appetizer trays
