"Tacky" things that turned out to be good ideas

heidi, on September 18, 2014 at 12:10 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 44

What "tacky" things did you decide to do that your guests loved?

We put up a honeyfund for additional excursions we might be interested in during our trip, and our friends and family are loving it! They are super excited about being able to contribute to that special week for us, which is the whole reason we wanted to do a honeyfund.

I put together a wedding crossword puzzle (found here:http://mrsfancee.com/wedding-crossword-puzzle/) which was also considered "tacky." I've shown it to several friends and family members and they think it's a great idea! The wedding is still a month away, so we'll have to see how big a hit it really is.

I'm a firm believer "tacky" is a subjective word and whether something is and isn't depends on your personal circle of friends and family. So, share. What were you told was "tacky," did anyway, and turned out great?

I will let you know if they turned out great in two weeks, but here are some things that I think could be thought of as tacky.

Centerpieces - pom poms, football, and ticket stubs.

The mascot coming to the reception

Me coming down the aisle to 2001: A Space Odyssey

    Getting married in the Statehouse

    Having a secular ceremony/short ceremony.

We will see how it turns out.

I tried to be as un-tacky as possible... I think maybe my mason jar centerpieces? I vowed I wasn't going to do them bc they had been done to death, but I found these glitter ones that I liked and they *are* just so cheap.... so we'll see how it goes.

We are having a dry wedding, but going to go out after. So far we have had a lot of people happy and 'proud' of our decision.

I agree with the honeyfund. My coworkers love it! I have had some call me and request that I add additional items to it. Just goes to show that weddings are not one size fits all.

I am dead set on making burlap silverware pouches We are having a woodland theme and they just "go" with everything. I also want the satisfaction of having something cool to sell after the wedding.

GameCox... did you watch last week's 4 weddings? The GameCox mascot was at a wedding there... and it was a total hit!

I did the 'B' list invites, and none of them were offended - they were all super excited to be able to share our big day with us, and they understood that we have a large family and needed to give then "first dibs" so to speak.

Snarky & Mrs Bauer... I did the same thing with B list invitations and NO ONE was offended.

Your sentiments fit mine exactly! People understand and they are happy you thought of them.

I'm reminding guests 15 days before (today) about our wedding... but I bet it will cut down on the no-shows. I'll let you all know.

Heidi, I did a crossword puzzle too! I incorporated it into the wedding programs. Here's the link I used to create it: http://puzzlemaker.discoveryeducation.com/CrissCrossSetupForm.asp (they're super easy to make).

My wedding is going to be the tackiest! The way my Fw is planning it so far. The only thing I ask is that my bridal party be even, and we have NO BURLAP OR MASON JARS! LMAO I'm about in that IDGAF mode already!

Eta: List of fw's tacky ideas

~Going to get food (pasta) the day before, no idea who is going to stay at 2nd venue all day to warm them up in the oven.

    ~Kegs of beer

    ~No photographer

    ~Plastic silverware

    ~Paper plates and napkins

    ~No assigned seating

    ~Plastic cups

I'm sure I will come up with more I'll add later.

So glad to hear all of these HoneyFunds have been a hit, because we are leaning towards doing one! Seems like a great way to do some awesome excursions on our honeymoon (and not just add useless household items to a registry so people don't feel like we are asking for cash).

ETA: Just realized another tacky thing we are doing -- not giving all BMs/GMs +1s. Only guests in long-term relationships (including SOs, fiances, etc.) will be getting a plus 1, and this includes our wedding party. Everyone there will know other people and I don't feel it is necessary to give a friend a +1 so she can bring a random guest to my wedding (who presumably won't know anyone else, otherwise they would probably be invited since we have a LARGE guest list) just because she is a BM. This one has gotten me a bit of crap here on WW, but everyone I've talked to about it in person thinks that's a very reasonable way to draw the line.
