Table Runners- bad idea???

Pumpkin's Sunshine, on May 10, 2011 at 2:26 PM Posted in Style and Décor 0 14

So, I can find Chinese satin or taffeta runners for $2.50-ish a piece including shipping. I can also buy tulle rolls or fabric and make them by cutting out strips from a bolt or using the rolls. I would do double layers on the tulle and make them for about $1.20 each (half price). Do you think it would look dumb to take the tulle and use it for a table runner?

You have to weight it down if you use tulle. Plus worry about fraying edges, etc...

Persoanlly, I'm not a fan of tulle for a table runner- but that's a personal preference. Have you priced eBay? I got mine for about $1.50 each (after shipping) for damask runners.

I dont think it will look bad at all, and its much more cheaper than using actual material or fabric.

My tables are 12 feet long (yikes) so my plan was to scatter candles along the whole length, thus weighing it down. Thanks for the picture Anita! That helps.

I found the ones on ebay for $2.50 but I couldn't find any cheaper.

I'm having the same issue with table runners let me know what you find with reasonable shipping cost.

My concern with tulle runners is that you'll either need to pick one in a similar color to the tablecloth (like Anita posted), which will fade into the background; or pick one for contrast, which may look cheap.

    What are your colors/theme?

I am also not a fan of tulle.

Have you considered checking out a Christmas Tree Shop. I got most of our runners there.

In our head table mock up, the ribbons cannot be seen. All runners will look like the "F". My FH sewed them.

Tulle could work, doubled up, however if your wedding is outside, really have it weighted down across the table cause it will blow away. We did this with satin chair sashes once, and had an issue in the beginning. Smiley smile

Do you mind me asking why you're purchasing as opposed to renting table runners from some where local? A lot of times you're talking a $1-3 each with no shipping charges. Not to mention they would have countless colors and materials.

If you are still interested in buying, at Hobby Lobby or Michael's they sell rolls of tulle 8" wide and I think 30 feet long for pretty cheap, you could wait for a coupon or watch for sales.

My colors are dark purple and lime green. I am doing white tableclothes with the purple runners. Around here, the cheapest I found for rentals was $4 each- yikes! I talked it over with my mom and I think I will do the tulle rolls doubled up. They are the cheapest option. My reception is indoor and the candles scattered over the middle will hold it down. I can do all my tables for about $20 worth of tulle.

    Thanks for your help ladies!

I'm actually trying to make the same decision. I'm going to have dark purple table cloths with silver napkins and chair bows. I'm wondering if a silver table runner would be too much or if it would actually tie everything together.

What color are your tablecloths? Is it a light silver? I would be concerned that a light silver table runner on a white or ivory tablecloth would not stand out enough.

I don't like the idea of tulle, I just personally hate the way it looks. I also had some trouble finding a decent price for table clothes and runners. For table cloths everyone wanted $15 or more and $5 for runners. So I opted to buy the material from Hobby Lobby and my sister is helping me make them. For about 20 tables I am only spending $100 which saves me about $300.

I wouldn't use the tulle, but what about organza? It's still sheer, but a thicker material and a nicer look. Here's an idea of the look:

You may find it a litter cheaper than that. It would depend. I also found it in the roll as well.

I honestly believe it will give a much better affect than the tulle.

Did you end up using tulle as table runners? I'm considering using dark blue tulle for mine.
