Survived..now I have to cover the scars!

pir8folife, on January 22, 2014 at 5:43 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 26

So, although it is a very long story, ill provide a brief overview.. in May of 2013 I became very ill with strepococccus (sp) pneumonia. I was entirely septic, and spent 6 days on the ventilator and two weeks in ICU 16 days total. Honestly, Im lucky to be alive today--but my luck ran out when I came home.(ironically one year to the date of our wedding).my FH (bff at the time) was still injecting me with one of the strongest antibiotics they make..Vancomycin. Unfortunately the drug that saved my life ended up giving the most serious drug reaction doctors had ever seen. I literally had blisters all over my body, from head to toe. I was treated with three rounds of steroids and finally, they dried and my skin died and fell off (pretty I know), and I was left with a purple hue of scarring resembling blotching. 8 months later they have faded to a tan color..and although they are no where as bad as they are, I would hate to show those on my wedding day. For thst reason I choose a full aline gown (allure 8862) and am wearing my very long hair down to cover my back scars..so all thats exposed and very scarred are my arms (the blisters never reached my face). So..all of that being said, has anyone had good experience with body make up or any makeup that won't rub off on my dress that I could use? And before anyone suggests Microderm abrasion or plastic surgery..the doc already ruled that out, apparently neither would help! Any help would be appreciated.

Just want to congratulate you on toughing it out. And while I have no makeup advice to offer (except maybe those stocking sleeves people use to cover tattoos), and although you might obsess over the details, everyone will be thinking about what a beautiful bride you are and not about those scars Smiley smile best of luck!

Do you have pictures?? I've been into special effects for a long time, and off the top of my head, different types of wax or liquid latex come to mind, along with foundation?? It depends on how big of an area you need to fix. Best of luck!!

I am so sorry to hear about your ordeal - have you thought about the make up that people use to cover their tattoos? I know it is thick and gives pretty good coverage.

Glad to hear you are healthy again - even if there are scars.

Although, I get where you are coming from with not wanting them to show especially on your wedding day but I have to say, it would be great to see you rock those scars and show everyone how much you overcame to get where you are!

Do you use a daily lotion/oil on the scars to help fade them? I'm a huge fan of Bio-Oil; I had patches of scars on my back due to a cancer scare, Bio-Oil really, really helped fade them.

Hmmm, perhaps airbrushed makeup would work? I know there's a tattoo covering makeup made for bodies, but I can't think of the name right now. Derma something.

First of all, scars are beautiful.

2nd, you can add a lace jacket to your dress and cover your arms and back if you like so that you can have a pretty updo to show off your face.

3rd, you can try regular make up foundation or go to an air brush technician for a one-on-one tanning session to even out the blotchiness a little bit

I worked at a physical rehab center and have seen a bad vanco reaction. to be septic and go through that.....girl your luck did not run out!! you are still alive and will be that much more beautiful on your wedding day!!! i have no advice as far as makeup goes, but i do know that if you use make up on your face, its always a good idea to spray with hairspray to get it to set and stick...maybe try that??

I'm with Almost Mrs.King. I would say a lace jacket or airbrush. neither should stain your gown and also give you the confidence on your day.

and even if you don't find a solution to cover your scars, don't let it get to you. Just remember that you are finally marrying your bff who loves you just as you are and sees you as the most beautiful woman he could imagine spending his life with.

I second air-brushing. I have a scar down the back of my neck from brain surgery, and with my hair up, it's easily seen. My make-up artist is a magician, I swear. The scar doesn't bother me most times, but for our ceremony, when my back is to everyone, I don't want it that noticeable.

I also second using lotion or Vitamin E to help fade.

Either way, be proud of your battle wounds, girl!

I would say airbrush makeup, or perhaps Dermablend? It's a makeup made to cover tattoos, so I'm pretty sure it would cover scars like that pretty easily.

Have you tried using a scar cream like Mederma? Supposedly they work really, really well. I haven't ever used them, but I've always heard good things.

Everyone has covered what I was going to say with the tattoo concealer and airbrush, but I just wanted to add that you're a total badass! I personally think you should rock then, but I understand being critical of ourselves. Best of luck!

I echo what FutureMrsKing said...your scars are BEAUTIFUL and are testimony to what a fighter you are! Anyone attending your wedding, must know your trials and seeing those leftover remnants of scars, will only remind everyone just how very blessed that they are to have you in their lives! You earned them! Wear them with pride! =)

Dermablend is actually scar cover up - it has become used for tattoo coverup in recent years, but its original purpose was to mask scars on burn victims. Its heavy duty mud basically. I know drag queens who wear it and can cover up a 3 day stubble with it. I would save this route as a last resort because there is a good deal of work that goes in to applying it correctly so that it will not rub off.

Airbrush make up is a safe route as it drys fast and doesn't rub off on everything. I would consider this in combination with Bronzing/tanning as a way to hide the scars before anything else.

If you do plan to do the Dermanblend find a artist who is experienced with it as well as visit JCPenny (I think thats where it's sold now) to have someone color match you. As well do a test run with it to make sure it gives you the cover up that you want.

Dear glad to see you are alive and doing well other than scars, use Dermablend. They have many different blends in which you can use yourself. You can go to dermablend.com and find out for yourself the different types available to you. It is waterproof, smudge resistant etc. Get a sample from a department store that carries it near you, then go home put it on and put on a white shirt, wear it all day and see what happens. That way you know you will not have problems on your wedding day. Read up on it on their website as many I knew personally have had great success covering up tats and scars.

A: Nothing you put on your skin will ever be a "miracle." Things that help topically Vitamin E oil, cocoa butter and shea butter (not lotion, lotions have alcohol in them, you need the straight waxy butter stuff 100%) Dont use over the counter scar cures that have alcohol in them (mederma etc) shea butter is what you need, they sell cocoa butter in the african american section of most drug stores in its pure form B: Swimming everyday helps alot, but it isnt an instant cure, itll take about two years. C: Eating foods with vitamin A and E regrows skin (orange vegetables like sweet potatoes and carrots) Other than that its all vitamin e oil, if you cant find it, buy the supplement and pop the pills and rub it on your skin.

Dermablend. But seriously? Be proud of your journey and your strength. No one is going to be looking at your scars. They'll be looking at the woman they love and support on her wedding day.

I use Dior Airflash on my face and it covers every flaw. I've never used it on other parts of my body but I think it would work. You can try it out at Dior counters in department stores to see if you like it. It's similar to airbrush makeup but easy to put on yourself.
