Surprise Wedding Dance??

LiveLaughLove, on May 7, 2014 at 12:09 AM Posted in Planning 0 21

I'm still not 100% sure if we're going to do a surprise wedding dance, but we're considering it. Was thinking of doing it directly after the father/daughter & mother/son dance (which might be done together). My FH and I are into classic rock, 70's/80's music, some country, folk, alternative, and some newer dance music. It's a little hard coming up with a good surprise wedding dance song, but some possibilities I was thinking of were White Wedding by Billy Idol, Need You Tonight by INXS, Simply Irresistible by Robert Palmer, and Love Don't Die by the Fray. Any ideas or suggestions would be much appreciated!! :-)

We did a surprise dance at my BFF's wedding and it was such a blast! I think White Wedding would be a fun song Smiley smile

Would this be instead or in addition to the first dance?

I'm just going to be honest - I think these are overdone and unless it's REALLY good and REALLY fun to watch, don't.

I plan on doing one, but I have a friend that is a choreographer, and a really good one at that. If I didn't have her there's no way I'd do it.

I have a really dumb question, what is a surprise dance vs a first dance?

This surprise dance would be in addition to a first dance. So, we were thinking of possibly doing the first dance, then the father/daughter & mother/son dance, and then breaking from that directly into a surprise dance. A surprise dance is usually more of a fast-paced dance that guests would not have expected the bride/groom, wedding party (or whoever) to do.

@We'llAlwaysHaveParis - Thank you for your honesty! :-) Yeah, that's why we've been debating if we're going to even do it lol. We're not the *best* dancers either, but we're decent.

@FutureMrsC - We don't know anyone who's a choreographer Smiley sad. We were considering looking at possible YouTube videos for dances, but I'm thinking more so that we'll just scratch the idea entirely lol.

Any more ideas or suggestions are greatly welcomed though please!! :-)

I sort of want to do a surprise dance (if I'm on the same page as you)... flash mob-ish except with belly dancing. I belly dance with a bunch of the ladies that I'm inviting to the wedding and most of us know the same choreos already. Smiley tongue Not sure if we'll actually do it but whatever!

Mixed feeling on this. They look fun to do, as long as you two can pull it off. If you can't than probably not a good idea, you'll just look silly.

I think it would be a fun way to start the party part of the night.. I have been debating this as well.. our idea was to start our first dance but since neither of us like attention, we would cut our dance short and have my Matron of Honor start the Harlem Shake.. I think it would be fun but i'm not sure if we will go through with it

Yeah, we want it to also be a way to start of the party part of the night. The other thing is that we'll all be eating dinner inside our venue, then heading on the outdoor patio for the first dance and father/daughter & mother/son dance, and this will give the people at the venue time to get rid of the head table while everyone is gathered outside. They'll be clearing the head table to make room for a dance floor, so I was hoping to have a way to get everyone to come back inside for the dancing. Does this make sense? And if we don't do a surprise dance, does anybody have a good idea to start off the party and lead people back inside? We'll have the DJ also make an announcement.

I love White Wedding!!! I think we are going to do a flashmob dance and surprise my guests. I think we will do "I gotta feeling" by Blackeye Peas.

Could you wait and do the first dance indoors after they clear the head table and then do the surprise dance in conjunction with the first dance? For instance, if you have a slow song that you are going to dance to first, halfway through the song, the DJ could switch to the fun, upbeat song to which you and your FH do the choreographed part you have planned.

I went to Va Tech (hokies). FH told DJ last night he wants to start our first dance with about 15 seconds of the Hokey Pokey...then go into our song.

I LOVE this idea and can't wait to see the crowd's face!!!! I'm just disappointed I didn't think of it

@Hannah - I would have liked to do that, but the indoor venue is small and it might be kind of awkward with the workers moving the table with other guests still at their tables - I think the guests might get in the way of the workers moving the head table. Also, I was thinking the outdoor patio would just be beautiful for the first dance and for pictures of it happening out there.

@Cinnamon - That sounds like fun!! :-) I love White Wedding, but the more that I think about it, the song Simply Irresistible sounds more suiting for our theme and venue - our theme is rustic and our venue is a winery.

I'm thinking if FH and I have our father/daughter and mother/son dance at the same time, it would be easier for us to break off from our mom and dad and just approach each other in the surprise dance - and then halfway through the song, I would maybe even involve some of the wedding party, and all of us (together with the wedding party) will start dancing toward the doors to go back inside and then go on the dance floor.

What do you guys think? lol I have so many ideas but not sure how good they are haha.

We started thinking of this last night! We are thinking of doing the evolution of dance, I think it will be funny, and not one person would think that would be something we would do!

I just looked up the evolution dance on Youtube, and it looks awesome!! :-) I would actually consider using that too! Are you guys going to use the whole song?

If you are doing two dances as a couple, a surprise dance and a first dance, I would seriously consider doing a combined father/daughter and mother/son dance. I would maybe also abbreviate your first dance and then ask others to join in. Guests can be irked when they just get to a wedding and want to talk to friends they haven't seen in a while but the DJ keeps announcing a new festivity and they don't want to be rude by talking over whatever new activity is starting. Four dances in a row sounds like a lot -- you don't want to stifle conversation and mingling.

Yes, you're definitely right! That's why we might just combine the father/daughter and mother/son dance. If we do do a surprise dance, I would also like it to be kind of short - so we might just do a little surprise dance for the first half of a song, and then start dancing into the venue to lead guests inside for the dancing part.

Thank you for your honesty, Celia Milton! :-) Yeah, I've had mixed feelings about the whole surprise dance thing, although I do want a way for guests to come back into the venue for the dancing part of the night. We could also just keep that simple and have the DJ make a simple announcement for guests to come back inside? lol
