Superstitions about seeing the bride in the dress - Discussion

I feel like it is well known that it is bad luck for the groom to see the bride in her dress before the wedding. This is often why brides don't take grooms dress shopping or with them to dress fittings. Does anyone know why this is? Does anyone else not believe in this superstition? I want to hear...

I want to hear from others on this a little bit.

Edit: not exactly first looks or day of seeing, but like buying and trying the dress specifically.

My FH went with me to almost all of my appointments when I was looking for my dress. It’s just a dress and if I love something, he will love it too but I just couldn’t make such an expensive decision without his input!

These actually are not superstitions but traditions based on arranged marriages. Not seeing each other before the wedding was because it was arranged. The blusher for the veil, meant to hide her face until the moment she is on the altar. Bridesmaids were meant to wear white to confuse and ward off evil spirits, and I believe the best man was there to fight other men from taking the bride?

I am not doing a first look because timing and location do not work out for us to do that. We are getting ready in completely different areas. If we were though, I would do those cute photos where we are back to back beside a door or on either side of a wall. its cute.

These days, people can do things however they want, and these old traditions are based on arranged marriages and old wives tales.

I'm only slightly superstitious (I only really adhere to some theatre traditions) but I insist on FH not seeing anything to do with my dress until we're at the altar. It really has nothing to do with bad luck though. I just want to surprise him.

I think it’s a silly superstition! I don’t believe in bad luck, if FH and I are meant to be together, him seeing me in my dress ahead of time isn’t going to tear us apart! However I’m still not going to let him see it as I want it to be a surprise!

My sister will be married 20 years this summer. They picked out her dress together and are today one of the happiest married couples I know. So, I'm not putting much stock in that superstition.
That being said, I love tradition! I look forward to all of it. Whether you believe in it or not, it can still be fun to pretend.

I didn't really have that suspicion and have told my FH he can look at it if he'd like. He has declined every time and told me he wants to be suprised when I come down the aisle.

Honestly, I never knew why. But in my family is like forbidden for the bride and groom to see each other before the ceremony. like FORBIDDEN. Dramatic forbidden too. If my mother found out she would probably faint and tell me I just created a curse on my marriage lol.

LOL that's so interesting! I would love if you would ask so I could hear why! I think its a big deal to a lot of people but lately the first look trend and realizing its the marriage that counts not the wedding that's been making me question it.
