Superstitions about seeing the bride in the dress - Discussion

I feel like it is well known that it is bad luck for the groom to see the bride in her dress before the wedding. This is often why brides don't take grooms dress shopping or with them to dress fittings. Does anyone know why this is? Does anyone else not believe in this superstition? I want to hear...

This is often why brides don't take grooms dress shopping or with them to dress fittings. Does anyone know why this is? Does anyone else not believe in this superstition? I want to hear from others on this a little bit.

Edit: not exactly first looks or day of seeing, but like buying and trying the dress specifically.

Exactly! I love hearing what everyone has to say because like you, FH was with me for both shopping trips, helped me pick "the one" and went with me to make payments on it and to go pick it up! and exactly the wow factor is a must for me, and hopefully he will forget what it even looks like before then!

My biggest reason is just that I want him to be surprised. My mom is a little more pushy about not wanting him to see it. Not in a bad or mean way, she just encouraged me not to store my dress at the house until the wedding "incase" he were to see it. (which is good because I'd want to constantly try it on!)

Such a cute idea to walk down together! Exactly! my FH and I went shopping together and alone at that and even though there wasn't a picture of it, I will never forget him sitting in that chair looking up at me and sharing something so big together. :')

I don't believe in superstitions. My husband was the one who found the dress designer for me, and he went to almost all of the dress appointments with me. He saw me in my dress a lot in all of its varying stages. It took nothing away from our wedding day, or ceremony. We got ready together, and had getting ready photos done together. We also walked down the aisle together. We didn't build up our wedding day as some kind of magical day where I surprise him in a dress like a princess/pretty pretty princess syndrome.

I didn’t take FH dress shopping because he would have been bored to tears. I did show him a pic of me in the dress though. He likes it😀

We’re doing a first look, plus we’re staying in our hotel room together the night before. So we’ll definitely see each other beforehand!

We lived together and got ready together the morning of our wedding. But he didn't see my dress until I got dressed that morning and needed help with the buttons.

I'm not superstitious (although my mother is) so I don't think it's bad luck for him to see the dress or see me in the dress. He wants to see the dress (he's just curious about everything) but I want him to see me in the dress and the veil and whole look. He's not an easy crier, but I'm hoping I'll coax it out of him Smiley tongue

I did walk him by a display from the bridal boutique at a bridal expo and told him my dress was there. he actually guessed the right one! I didn't confirm though.

I have a friend who took her now husband wedding dress shopping and he saw her dress and they're still going strong 10 years, 2 kids and a couple major health scares later.

I don't know where the superstition comes from, and don't really care about FH seeing me for superstitious reasons we both felt very strongly that he should see me for the first time walking down the aisle. We don't want to take away from that moment. I never dress up, or wear makeup so FH will be shocked when he sees me on our wedding day and we want it to be as I walk down the aisle to get married. If it is before then that moment will be significantly diminished for us.

This is pretty cool to hear! I would love to see some of your getting ready together pictures! I feel like FH and I have a similar bond where we do everything together and while other people would think its crazy, I think it would make my wedding day so much more special! Don't know if you saw my previous comments, but FH was there with me to buy and try my dress too, I just don't know if I should continue to show him and keep him involved or make it a surprise. reading this makes me feel like I should be totally inclusive of him!

I'm hoping to coax tears too which is why I am wondering if I should continue to show him or cut him off and surprise him later. Its good to know that your friends are still 10 years strong! I'm not very superstitious so I know that showing him a dress wont doom our relationship.

I saw a funny article about a couple that did a first look except she was in her pajamas and hair curlers without makeup oh it was so funny! I understand not wanting to take away from that moment but if you were looking for a creative first look idea I thought I would share Smiley smile

This is what I've heard as well.

I personally love the idea of surprising my FH. It just seems fun!

Nope I don’t believe in superstitions. I showed FH a picture of my dress knowing that he’d forget what it looks like and he has Smiley smile he asked me the other day if it’s strapless.

I am torn between having a first look/prewedding photos and having my fiancé’s first look be when I walk down the aisle. I am not superstitious myself, but it is so hard to decide.

I agree, its such a hard decision! I have seen an alternative to the first look that is called a "first touch" where you hold hands and maybe say a prayer or just talk together from behind a door. you cant see each other, but holding hands with your man and talking with him would give you that private moment of calm before the wedding. lots of people suggest doing a first look to be able to enjoy cocktail hour with guests instead of having picture time.

We aren't doing a first look, but we will pray back to back before I walk down the isle. FH is very superstitious. I tried to show him a picture of a wedding dress I tried on but didn't buy and he didn't want to see me in any wedding dresses at all. I even have my wedding dress in our guest room closet and he avoids that room like the plague just in case, lol! This is just our personal choice.

Not seeing my FH is impossible as we have been living together for many years - but we won't be shopping together. First of all, he hates shopping for cloths. Secondly, I want something to be a surprise on our wedding day.

It's kinda fun in my opinion to keep him in the dark to some extent. I'm shopping for accessories and ideas because I'm making my dress, so he will likely see it hanging around the craft room somewhere, but he definitely won't see it on me until the "big day".
