Suits: Should Our Wedding Party get a Classic Fit or a Modern Fit?

Samantha & Antonio, on June 8, 2022 at 5:32 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 11

My fiancé and I have an appointment to organize suits for our bridal party this upcoming Sunday. My fiancé already knows what he wants, a slim fit suit with a shawl lapel (which looks good on him). We are just trying to figure out which suits we want to give everyone else (groomsmen, bridesman, dad, etc.) We don't want them to have the exact same one as the groom, so we are tied between picking a classic fit or modern fit for the rest of the party. On one hand, the modern suits might look better with my fiancé's slim fit suit. However, renting the modern fitted suits is anywhere between $100-$150 dollars more than the classic suit options, and I feel bad making our party pay more than they need to.

Any advice for people who've been in a similar situation?

Is there anyway for them to also get a slim fit but in a different color?

I'd opt for the same fit but different colors. That way the look will be cohesive while still allowing your groom to stand out. You could do different colored suits or different colored ties/ bowties and pocket squares.

    Great question Imani!

So my fiancé plans on wearing a black suit, with a black vest and maroon button up shirt. I added a reference picture for his suit down below. We were thinking the groomsmen would also wear black suits, but have white shirts instead (no idea on tie colors though other than my bridesman’s tie will match the bridesmaid dresses 😂)
There’s a few issue I have with the slim fit suit options. One is that it’s still more expensive than the classic fit. The other issue I have it that some of our groomsmen are plus size, and I want to make sure everyone feels comfortable in what they are wearing. That’s why we’re torn between the modern style and the classic style because both of those option offer are a little looser than the slim fit.

Absolutely love this!!! It looks so well put together! I think with the plus size they have to pay additional anyway because of the size. I have a coworker who recently wore a tux and told me he paid extra bc of the size he needed. I’ll reach out to him and ask if it was classic fit or modern. Just to kinda give more insight for the groomsmen. If you did have to go with the modern option, do you think it’s something they could afford?

If the groomsmen are coming together to try on suits, maybe you have them try on both and see what they prefer? Also, maybe you two can reach out individually to each groomsman and ask what they're comfortable spending on a suit/tux rental? We do that for bridesmaids dresses all the time but I don't know if we ever ask that for the groomsmen.

My advice would be for each man to wear the suit that fits him best and makes him feel most comfortable. Some may choose slim fit, others may choose classic fit.

Every body is different, and everyone has a budget, so I'd let the groomsmen choose for themselves. Guests will notice the color, not the fit, esp for a men's suit.

Your groom's suit sounds like it will look very sharp! I like it!

I agree with this! The fits will flatter each body differently, so they should be wearing the fit based on their body type. You don't want to have a groomsman feel uncomfortable because the fit was chosen. People will notice the color more, whether it is the color of the suit itself, or the tie or shirt.

A good fitting suit makes a world of difference to how you feel in it! My husband is on the edge of being plus sized (his had to be custom made because nothing fit his proportions) and the suit he bought for our wedding is the first time he liked the way he looked in formal-wear and also felt physically comfortable.

Does it matter if the fit of their suit is exactly matching so long as the color and fabric matches? Will anyone notice, especially considering they are of varying body types? Some of them may be more comfortable (and look better) in a classic fit suit where others prefer a modern fit.

That's a really great point Grace!

I'll talk to our vendor on Sunday and see how we can organize our online portal so that our bridal party can choose if they want the classic suit option or the modern suit option. I'm sure if they're all black anyway, no one is going to care about the different fits.
