Suggestions for Wine Theme?

Heather, on July 19, 2012 at 9:35 AM Posted in Planning 0 34

So I was driving in my car yesterday and thought of a great idea. I had been looking at table number settings and I wanted to do something other than numbers. Some people do places, etc... I am going to have purple in my wedding so I was thinking whats purple.... grapes.... wine! Anyone who knows me, knows I used to work for Total Wine. I went to bartending school in college and got my wine certification as well. So I thought wine bottles for vases with grapes around them and mini wine bottles for favors/table name things. I can use grape varietals as table names?!? Fancy ones like Bordeaux, Borolo, Chianti, Montepulciano, Nebiolo, Malbec etc... There are so many french and Italian ones that I can use. I just love wine! Haha, I haven't even started to look at pictures yet but i have seen a few with wine bottles as vases. What do you all think? Any inspiration/suggestions welcome :-) I got so excited I went home and told FH and he was like, um, ok, whatever haha.

You can make your table numbers whatever you want!

I've been to a wedding where all the tables were Chicago themed -- Wrigley Field, Marshall Fields, Sears Tower, etc.

I can't remember who, but another WW member named her tables after things in her wedding. So the tables were like Organza, Hydrangea, etc.

Heather, that sounds like a lot of fun!

Would you need to cut off the neck of the bottles to use them as vases?

Will you have linens that would be "burgundy" or "rose" etc.?

You could have centerpieces of fresh grapes that guests can munch on.

    Here are some centerpiece ideas:

+ Cluster different sizes/colors of wine bottles together. You can spray paint some to make them purple if you want. You can use them as vases too.

+ Cut off the bottles and make them into candle holders (here's a link: http://diy.weddingbee.com/topic/my-diy-wine-bottle-centerpieces)

+ Put purple flowers under upside-down wine glasses

There's lots of cute stuff you can do with a wine theme!

@Ms. A those look pretty, but maybe hard to do lol. I LOVE the wine glass idea, a friend of mine did that at her bridal luncheon.

@Nancy I am going to do more of an amethyst or eggplant color, I think I want to do white table cloths and then the eggplant runner. I was definitely thinking fresh grapes, because they would be super cheap at Produce Junction. I think if I only do a couple 'sticks' of flowers in each bottle I won't have to cut them. Or even maybe silk flowers, not sure yet. My friend is a florist and we are going to talk about some ideas in a couple weeks.

Are there any other things I can do wine themed wise? I know the mini wine bottles are costly, but I still have friends that work at the wine store that can probably get a pretty good discount on cases.

As favors, you could give those fancy bottle stoppers.

I did Wine names for my table "numbers". I included a little bit about the wine on them as well. My center pieces are wine bottles that have been cut, so the table cards are going into the center vase/bottle with babies breath on a floral card holder (the little plastic sticks that florists use). I have 2 bottles on either side that have the bottom cut off and candles under them. I'm doing a wine them also, and am pretty much all set for my decorations, so if you need any ideas, I'm still coming up with them!

@ Lindsey - Oh cute! That is great, I have a whole wine book that I can use for this as well. That looks really nice :-) How many tables did you have? Did you do all red wine?

I did use all reds, only because I LOATHE whites. I only have 8 tables, so I have another sheet done too. My "favors" are actually being put to use during the reception... I took cheap wine glasses and spray painted the stem and bottoms with chalkboard paint, and have chalk at each table for them to personalize their glasses to use. My buffet signs are being held by 4 corks that have been glued together and wrapped in a ribbon. The wine theme has been so much fun to play around with.

That is a great idea for chalkboard paint, I love it :-) Where did you buy your wine glasses? How many people are you having at your wedding? I am going to have between 100 - 150 so I don't know how many I would have to buy but things get damn expensive LOL.

My friend is using wine corks as her seating cards, she saw the idea on etsy but is doing it herself. Its fun because all the BM are drinking wine and collecting the corks for her to make it a personal project but if you are short on time and arent alcoholics like us lol you can always go to a restaurant or wine store and ask them

I bought the glasses at IKEA, and got 6 for $4.99, and the chalkboard paint at Home Depot for $5.99 a spray can (took 1.5 cans for 84 glasses).

@Heather -- I haven't tried it yet, but I think you soak cotton yarn in acetone nail polish remover, wrap it around where you want to cut the bottle, light it on fire, and then stick it into an ice bath.

    I think it sounds fun!

Oh and I forgot about the corks! There are a ton of cute ideas for corks -- I've seen a wine cork garland, the place cards stuck in wine corks, you could fill a Dollar Tree vase with corks at each table....

@Poly - awesome! LOL, the discounts are great. Winery direct prices were awesome! AND 6 free bottles of wine a month, full timers got a whole case! What did you do there? I loved being a wine associate and doing the free tastings. I worked at the one in Claymont, DE. It used to be an Acme and is huge. I love seeing people's faces when they walk in for the first time, it's like a little kid in a candy store hehe.

@Ms. A - I would have to talk to FH about that, my clumsy self would probably burn the house down, or injure myself hehe. I am hoping that he will help with stuff, so far he is so so. I was impressed that he started looking at different venues. He so wants to get married at the Franklin Institute for some reason, silly boy. It is way out of our budget anyway LOL.

Here are some ideas... I know around e we have a homebrew store where you can buy ingredients for making beer and wine and bottleing supplies. They sell all varieties of bottle in different shapes and sizes by the case so you can intermix. They also sell corks of all sizes in bulk.
