Courtney, on January 19, 2017 at 12:59 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 28

So its late and i kow it best to just call and ask. For vegan guests what could i consider providing whereas our caterer is a local bbq joint. Were doing pulled pork and smoked chicken, but my SIL IS VEGAN and my nephew is allergic to dairy pretty much the only two who have restrictions.

Perhaps some sweet potato fries with some kind of meatless meat?? I'm not vegan so I can't think of too many options. How about approaching a local vegan restaurant? Since is for only two people they might be willing to do a delivery or someone could pick it up for you.

If you haven't already, you need to make sure your caterer doesn't have any kind of clause in the contract stating that they are to be the only ones (outside of the baker) providing any kind of food. A lot of caterers require that they're the only ones providing the food for liability reasons.

I agree with La Grosera. Your nephew should be able to eat the meat (maybe not the bread) as long as there's no diary in the BBQ sauce. I have a severe dairy allergy and do well at BBQ joints Smiley smile maybe call your SIL and see what she might like?

    Uninvite them #NoVegans jk

I would definitelycheck with the caterer, you can get in a lot of trouble with them if its in their contract to not have anyone but them. If you cant have outside caterers than I would see if the company has some sides or something they could eat. Or just let them know the menu and tell them that they might need to eat before.

I would hope that if your caterer does not have any options you can bring in outside food. What kind of sides are you having? First things first though, I would talk to your caterer and see if they can come up with anything. Sweet potato fries were a great suggestion. You could also see if they can put together some sort of salad. "Beyond Meat" is my all-time favorite vegan meat substitute brand. They make amazing chicken (amazing for not being actual chicken) and maybe the caterer could whip something up with that. It is sold at most Whole Foods!

More in depth . My SIL is one of my bridesmaids and her son ( my nephew is my ring bearer) even tho he has a severe dairy allergy he kinda follows in after his mom and cringes at the sight of eating meat. Other than mcdonalds chicken nuggets of course.

If you ask them I'm sure the chef can come up with something tasty for your guest.

Does your BBQ joint do pulled jackfruit? That's a good option for vegans. Failing that, I've had success grilling stuffed pepper, stuffed zucchini, squash with toppings...

BBQ seitan. It's available at regular stores like Whole Foods, and even my Publix carries seitan sausage in about four varieties. Requires zero prep. Check that the sauce is vegan. If not, they need a small amount that is. That plus salad, if there is a starch like rice that hasn't been made with chicken stock and butter, then you have a balanced meal. I'm vegan and weddings are a total nightmare. So thank you for being a good host and making sure all your guests are provided with a meal they can eat. For the "tell them to eat before" comment: that's rude as fuck and horrible hosting. You would never invite someone for a meal and tell them to eat before so you shouldn't do that at a wedding. Every guest should be provided with a balanced meal. If you don't know how to accommodate someone, do what you would do for a dinner party and ask them. Good work, OP!

Please don't do fries from the same BBQ place. Most vegans won't eat food prepared or fried in the same vat as meat. That being said, do you have any local vegan restaurants or caterers that can provide a couple of meals? I can suggest lots of things but I don't know what your options are.

Also, most traditional pasta is not vegan as it is made with eggs.

We asked our caterer and she was excited to come up with something special to fit our vibe but also be vegan.

Jackfruit is a member of the breadfruit family that has a mild taste and a similar texture to pulled pork when prepared in the same way. Therefore, when in a sandwich with BBQ sauce, it approximates the pulled pork experience fairly well. Some upscale BBQ caterers are beginning to offer it. We're having a BBQ welcome dinner the night before the wedding, and one grill will be reserved for vegetarian products (jackfruit, seitan patties, portabellos). It's worth asking!

Here is some information on jackfruit.

Vegan is hard as they won't eat ANY animal products. You can ask your caterer, but I doubt a BBQ place has true vegan options (no chicken doesn't cut it for a vegan). You definitely need to check your contract about outside food, and maybe need to investigate what vegan really means. There is a difference between vegan and vegetarian. If SIL is truly vegan, you're probably going to either 1) have her bring her own food, or 2) find a place that does vegan and order a meal for her.
