Stopping my period for the sake of the honeymoon?

Maria, on March 7, 2011 at 12:22 PM Posted in Planning 1 13

Ok I saw this thread earlier but there are 81 comments so gonna start a fresh one. I planned my wedding date last year because it was perfect. No period and my most...welll...perfect time of the month. Well my cycle has been moving up the calendar and now I am fearing by time July comes it will interfere with my honeymoon...either the period or it will be PMS week. So I am considering temporarily getting on Birth Control to prepare.

How far in advance should I start? I was considering the shot just because it would be once for a 3 month period. But I hear the side affect is wt gain and I fear not fitting into my dress in July if that happens. Any other suggestions? I will talk to my doc about it but I was wondering had anyone else planned to do this?

I used the Depo shot in the past. I didn't gain any weight from it, but other people have. You can also use BC pills and regulate exactly when your period will come from that.

But the Depo shot is probably the easiest. I'd get the shot 2 months before.

I used the NuvaRing. I love it! I have skipped a period or two while on it but I have been using it for a few years now. To skip, instead of taking it out for a week, just insert a new one at the end of the 3rd week. With any of these if you stop it, you may experience some bloating and a little break through bleeding. I would also suggest you speak to your GYN about it.

I'm glad you posted this. I've counted out my normal cycle all the way up until September and I think I will be fine.. that is if I stay on track so to speak. My mom said for me to get on BC to regulate.. but I cant make up my mind. And a question for those of you who know more about this to see if I counted right.. you start counting 28 days on the last day of your last period and the 28th day should be the day you start next month correct?

That is correct Chelsea but most women are different. My average cycle lenght is 35 days, I'm currently using an app iPeriod to calculate everything, it's been a little scarry lately because for the past 5 months it's been exactly on point, it tells me the exact date, very helpful

I have an April wedding and I just started the pill again (I am on week 2). So my period will come on 1 week before the wedding and I won't have the next one until after the honeymoon! PERFECT! I did the Sunday start meaning I took the first pill on the Sunday following the start of my last period. Even though I didn't start 3 or 4 months ahead of time, I am sure I will be fine. Hope it works out for you!

@Future 2011 that is perfect timing!

@Patricia J- thanks for the info! I thought I was doing it right. I've kept track of my period since 2 months ago, I'm gonna do it this month and next so I can get a better idea of what my average cycle is then go from there. I've just been going off of the normal 28 days for now, and even going off of 28 days I'm ok for the honeymoon.. and I hope it stays that way! If i do decide to get on BC, what would be your reccomendation as to when to start it? I want to be off my period for the 3rd week in September

I've been using Apri / Azurette (same drug, different names) and been really happy with it. It's a lower hormone dose than some BC, so I haven't gotten mood swings like I have on other BC. I'd recommend going on BC about 3 months before your wedding, so you can see how you adjust to the hormones. Also - the AWESOME thing about taking the pill is that you can choose to not have your period at all. So no worrying about figuring out your schedule, and when exactly you should start taking them. In every pack you get 28 "active" pills and like then a week of "inactive" pills. If you want to avoid having your period, when you finish the 28 active pills of one pack, throw the inactive pills away, and start taking a new pack of 28 active pills the next day. You won't get your period.

Thanks ladies. I just wish my period was more stable. It literally moves weeks after so many cycles. At the time I set my wedding date, my cycle was coming on the last few days of the month into the first few days of the next month. So perfect. Well as of last month my cycle is now on week of the 14th and appears to be moving UP the month which means my period could be ON right smack in the middle of my honeymoon. Yikes! Soooooo I am thinking maybe do the pill so i can control it for real. I was on the pill a few years ago but it sent me into early menopause (which included low, low libido) after being on it for over a year. I had to come off it. So I really just want it for this one purpose, then I'll get off it.

After we planned out honeymoon I realized the same thing. So, I just kept taking the pill through out my period week. I recall seeing/reading somewhere that if you do do that, you should start about 3 months before the date. I was on the shot for a year and didn't like the side effects. There is also no gurantee that you will be period free. I know of people who were on the shot and still had spotting during the week of when their period was supposed to be.

If you're going to the pill route. I'd start right away so your systme has time to regulate and get usde to the pill. But talk to the DR first!

I'm so happy you posted this! I've been wondering the same thing. I keep track of my period and everything but I swear I think it hates me because it seems to always fall on important dates and times.

@Jenn D. - That's really helpful. I'm on the pill and have been for a while. I will do just that and hopefully I can enjoy the honeymoon with no worries.

@Mrs. in Sept - I'll be doing it for my wedding day and honeymoon too - I had originally tried to adjust my period so that the wedding day would be in a "good" week - (i.e one of the weeks when I'm least hormonal, least prone to a breakout, etc) and instead I messed up and managed to schedule my period to start ON my wedding day. Whoops! So, I'll be skipping this one.
