Steaming your wedding gown????

Jlynn, on July 12, 2010 at 1:28 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 10

I am on a super tight budget and heard that if you hang your dress in the bathroom while running the shower the steam from the shower will press it. Has anyone tried this does it work, will it mess anything up with my dress???

I've heard of doing that with your veil but not your dress. I know if you want to get maximum volume from your slip you should hang it upside down leading up to the wedding day.

I work at a bridal shop. We tell our brides to do this all the time. It releases the wrinkles but not QUITE as well as a steamer. It might just release them but not get rid of them completely. It WONT hurt your dress at all though, promise. The only time steam can possibly hurt the dress is if its taffeta, and that's only if you get water spots on it (sometimes it doesn't come out- 90% of the time it does though)

Soo.. yes you can try it, it wont hurt. But I would call around to bridal shops and ask if they can steam it for you. We don't usually charge, especially if they got the dress from us (so call your bridal shop!)

There's also a steamer at Target (I saw it online, might be in stores, Idk) for like $15. Don't know how good it is, but I'm definitely registering for it, or I might go by it. Steamers are SO helpful.

Thanks for the input guys!!! My dress actually is taffeta Smiley sad the place where i'm getting my alterations done is rediculous! They are charching me $65.00 to steam it so i'm trying to find some where less expensive. My dress has a pick up slirt so it doesn't look too bad or wrinkled, so I can't justify spending $65.00 to steam it.

Bring it back to your salon or DB shop, they will usually do it for free if you bought it from them. If they ask why, just tell them your seamstress is charging, which is not usualy btw.

Go to another alterations lady and maybe she will steam it for you, for much less than a professional cleaner---but it won't be as pristine steamed but really good enough!

Bride beware - if you purchase your gown from David's Bridal and it is wrinkled when you buy it from them, do not believe them when they say you can bring it in a day or 2 before the wedding to have it steam cleaned for free. They are liars!!!!! I tried to have them do it earlier this week, and they refuse. Here it is, Christmas Eve, and I have to figure out a way to get the wrinkles out myself, since my wedding is the day after Christmas.
