Just Said Yes August 2021

Starting Phd program end of August and wedding is in 3 months!

I have no clue what to do. Ugh! My fiance and I could easily go elope. Would it be nice to have a memory of a nice wedding? Yes. But this stress is so horrible. I have only my mom to help me. We have decided to do a somewhat small wedding that has turned into a larger wedding than maybe expected. Neither of us like having attention toward us. It looks like it could be at most 50 people at the wedding.

What do we do for a reception? My fiance and I don't drink, we don't partake in party like things. Trying to plan this is extremely hard. My fiance is not helpful. Any ideas from anyone?

You don’t need to have a big party atmosphere, a really nice dinner is a good reception.
But it sounds like you may not be into the wedding idea at all?
It’s ok to just go get married. You should only have a wedding if you both want one!

Yeah, we've decided to do a wedding but we do not want the normal reception party feel that most are. Just struggling to figure out what then do you do...?

Have a nice dinner party instead. Maybe rectangle tables in a square or lined up?
Unless you are opposed to alcohol in general, rather than just not being drinkers yourselves, serving wine with the meal would be nice. It gives a more “special occasion” feel in a way.

That is a real nice idea. Never thought of any idea of that as it isn't your typical wedding. But I guess, is there a typical wedding? Thank you for the idea. I like that

I work in higher ed (on the IT side) and my FH is an academic so I have an idea of how busy your next couple years will be - you don’t need the added stress of a wedding that is more than you want!

If you can find a restaurant that has a private event space that fits the amount of your guest list, that will really streamline the planning for you!

I agree with PP that a dinner party reception may be a better fit. Another option is doing a cocktail party style reception with heavy appetizers. Guests can mingle and chat and you can skip the dancing and bouquet toss and all of those things. As long as you properly host any guests you invite (by providing food and beverages), you are fine. The beverages don't have to be alcoholic either, unless you want to offer that to your guests.

Thanks for another great suggestion. Both are wonderful and we will have to think about it. We are going to speak with our venue in just a couple weekends

Definitely see what they have! And as someone who is about to finish their 3rd year or doctoral studies, I encourage you to try to have as much fun and relax as much as you can in the coming months because, while rewarding and great, grad school is rough and very stressful (as I'm sure you know). Enjoy everything exciting coming up ahead!

I can't imagine how stressful that must have been for you.
