Square Invitations: Anyone know how much postage is?

Sam, on January 27, 2015 at 10:16 PM Posted in Planning 0 8

Hi, All!

I am looking at some square invitations. I know that they cost more to mail because of the unique shape, so I was wondering if anyone knew just how much more.

Thank you!

I had square STDs. They ended up costing .98 each to mail. I think there was a surcharge for being square and a surcharge for being oversized (?) as well. My best advice would be to take a sample into the post office ahead of time to check. I swear they just invent rules sometimes..

Mine were $1.19 each to mail. They were square and a little bulky. They were a kit from Michaels. I put one together and took it to the post office to have it weighed and measured. I ended up paying extra postage to avoid having too many stamps on them. I think they had a $1.00 stamp and a $.23 stamp on them, plus the postage on the response card. I only sent 35 invitations so not too bad on the pocket.

Take it to the post office. My licenses in NJ are 8.5" square and they cost .98, but there is only four pieces of paper and a paper clip in them. You DON"T want to get them back!

Starting with first class postage, the square size adds 20 cents, then there is another 20 cents added for every ounce over 1 oz. There is also another 20 cents added for rigidity. You can weigh one and try to calculate your total per piece at

www.usps.com, or take one to your local P.O. like the other posts recommend.

    Thank you, everyone!

I am trying to decide between a more expensive invitation that is standard size (which I like more), or a cheaper invitation that is square. But, with the additional postage, I think its going to work out costing about the same.

I had no idea doing square anything added extra. that's crazy! I always just thought it was about the weight.

@Melissa its basically an "inconvenience fee". The square envelopes aren't standard sized, and because of that the post office machines have a hard time, it tends to slow things down or even require that they be processed by hand. You would think with technology they would have found a way to fix that by now, ha.

It depends on where you live. Up in Canada, square invites cost the same to ship as their standard counterparts- it comes down to bulkiness.

I'd hand-cancel your invites anyway- it keeps them from getting chewed in postal machines- and if you are paying the "pain in the ass tax" anyway in postage, you might as well take advantage of that!
