Spinoff: wearing white to wedding-related events other than the wedding

Amanda, on July 2, 2013 at 7:54 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 19

What do you think of people other than the bride wearing white to wedding-related events, such as a shower or the rehearsal dinner?

Last week, FMIL and FSIL came over to drop off some wedding stuff. While she was there, I had FSIL take a look in my closet (she's starting a new career soon and needs some business casual dresses, while I was looking to clean out a bit). She picked out two dresses to take with her, one of which was a short all-white dress. We came downstairs and FMIL said to FSIL (about the white dress): "that's so cute! you could wear it to Amanda's rehearsal!" Luckily FSIL kinda side-eyed to me and said she didn't think it was appropriate.

My opinion is that the color white should be reserved for the bride at all wedding-related events; however, the bride may wear whatever color she chooses. Maybe I'm being a little rigid, but I'd never dream of wearing white to someone else's shower. Am I the only one?

Agreed. There are so many other darn colors out there. Why white?!?

To be honest I never really thought about it... although I always pictured myself with a cute little white dress for my rehearsal and stuff.

Then again, I'm not the type of person who is offended by people wearing white to my wedding (I'm not happy about it... but things could be worse).

I also don't own anything white in dress form. I have no idea lol.

I wouldn't wear white at gunpoint, but this really seems like taking things too far. There are so many other things to worry about, why make this one of them?

Honestly, I'd have to look at pictures to remember what my girls wore to my shower and rehersal. I guess to me it's not that big of a deal.

I wouldn't wear white for someone else's wedding activities though out of respect for them.

I'm not worried about it, just curious if anyone else thought the same. I honestly thought it was just general common knowledge that white is reserved for the bride, but maybe not!

And honestly, even if someone wore white to my WEDDING, the most it would get out of me is thinking "hmmm, interesting choice" to myself. Definitely not a day ruiner.

    Thanks Celia!

Eh I don't plan on wearing white for my shower or rehersal so I really don't care (and probably wouldn't notice) if someone else did.

ETA - I wouldn't personally wear white to anyone else's event though.

I wouldn't wear it, but I won't stress if someone else does. Maybe take those occasions to stand out in a stunning red or show off one of your wedding colors...just a random thought. Smiley smile

Yea for me, whether the bride will be offended or not, I steer clear of all white or ivory. It just is what it is---let us have our damn moment and claim the color, ok?? hah I just can't get over it--I'm not so upset anymore after you all talked me off the ledge, but I am still completely confused as to why anyone would think it's ok??

Should people wear white? No. You can't tell people how to dress though and there will usually be someone who shows up in white or dressed very inappropriately. At the end of the day it doesn't really matter and it won't affect your wedding. They'll be the ones who look silly. So it doesn't really even cross my mind to be honest

I just feel like, if you are not the bride, you shouldn't wear white to her events...bridal shower/bachelorette/wedding. It just looks stupid and like you're trying to take the spotlight.

I would say it's just a color that should be steered clear of for wedding events. It doesn't make any sense when there's plenty of other colors to be worn.

I remember when I was 10, I went to my cousins wedding and I wore a white dress. I wasn't in the party, just a guest. Looking back, I feel bad about it. These days, I wouldn't think to wear anything that was ALL white to any bridal related event.

I don't really care if others wear white to wedding events (mine are over already, and no one did that I can recall). I didn't. But I also wouldn't wear white to someone else's in case they DID care.

Out the Window, you were 10! Forgive yourself! We watched my parents wedding video recently & one of my mom's best friends had a white dress on... I was like what the!!! But my mom was like oh I didn't even notice!

Regardless I would not wear white to a wedding event. I would be annoyed if someone wore ALL white to one of my wedding events, but some white is OK.
