Spinoff: Cupcakes vs a sheet cake.

MrsA, on July 29, 2015 at 11:53 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 19

Just answered another post but it got me thinking. I'm having a small 2 tier cake and grooms cake. I was going to have a sheet cake in the back, but I'm wondering about cupcakes instead of the sheet cake. Would anyone know off the top of your head what the cost difference is between the two? Simple white cake with buttercream frosting. Or I wonder if mini cupcakes would do fine as well. People could take one with cookies.

I think sheet cake is less expensive. We thought of having a faux cake and a sheet cake in the back when we first started planing. I splurged on my venue and caterer and was looking for a way to cut cost. I actually found a baker who charged me $270 for a three tier cake, 3 dozen cupcakes, 36 mini cupcakes and 2 dozen cake pops. I could be backwards on the numbers, but its a lot of bang for my buck and her cakes were amazing. I'm not sure if I helped, but look around. I think presentation is important

It also depends where you are, here in NYC one cupcake can cost around $2.50 or $3.50 for just a basic cupcake, add different flavors and price goes up. Sheet cake would definitely be cheaper.

I don't exactly know since I never thought to look into a sheet cake. But I assume the sheet cake is the cheaper of those options. We ordered cupcakes, with a small cake for cutting, and that price was still a little over our budget. It came out to 510-ish, so only 10-ish over budget. But that also includes delivery and setup. We got a small cake that serves 6-8, 4 dozen cupcakes, and 7 dozen mini cupcakes.

Sheet cakes would be cheaper. We're looking at cupcakes, and figure that with mini ones, we'll have to get at least double the number as people may eat two or three. Cupcakes really add up...

We are doing cupcakes. In my little mind, if there happens to be any leftovers, the cupcakes are easier to transport back to the after party than a sheet cake...but that is just me hoping that I can have a cupcake for breakfast the next day Smiley smile

So i am doing mini cupcakes with mine that were $2.50 each, the regular cupcakes for my baker were the same price as a serving of cake @ $5 a serving so it wasn't really a savings. i didn't ask what a sheet cake would cost so unfortunately i can't help you there. all the prices are going to vary by bakery too.

Sheet cakes are cheaper, but I prefer cupcakes - both for appearance and ease of serving.

True if you do a sheet cake your venue may charge you more for a cutting/ plating fee

I would go with the sheet cake just for uniformity. Plus I have a slight aversion to cupcakes at a wedding. I know a lot of people will disagree with me, but I just think they are better suited for children's class parties or birthdays.

I believe sheet cake would be the less expensive way to go. I would want cup cakes as they are pretty much self serve. FH has vetoed cupcakes for us though Smiley sad says they belong at Birthday Party's not weddings lol

We are doing a 3 tier cake and cupcakes. The sheet cake was significantly cheaper, but the cupcakes are self serve and easier. A sheet cake someone would have to cut and serve.

We saved on cutting/plating fees because we have cupcakes. FH also really wanted them because people can have mulitple flavors (we got minis). Works for me!

I'm not sure about the cost of sheet cakes, so I can only speak to cupcakes. We found a cupcake place in NJ (House of Cupcakes) that's $2 per regular size cupcake if you buy over 100. That's for any of their standard flavors (they have 40) as long as you don't add personalization. We choose not too since they are decorated so nicely. With personalization it would have been $2.75 per cupcake.

If you want to do cupcakes, I would ask if they give a discount for bulk ordering.

ETA: Cupcakes also would save on the cake cutting fee

We are doing a 2 tier cutting cake, and then cupcakes. This is because I have food allergies, so the cutting cake will be safe for me while the cupcakes will not. This way I (and our guests with food allergies) will know easily if the item they are about to eat is safe for them.

We have a 2 tier cake, bottom round is 10" top round is 7" and then a tiny 3" round for first anny.

This cake is supposed to feed 30 people. I am having 40 guests...and I also want cake for breakfast the next day because....cake.

I just ordered an additional 1/4 sheet cake to the order. (feeds 24) and it is $40.00

I think the sheet cake is less expensive. We are doing cupcakes because we are having 7 different flavors (we are doing a one-tier cutting cake too)

I'll echo what others have said - we saved money on cutting/plating fees by having cupcakes. That being said, I went with a place that has great prices and great cake. We are having a cutting cake, a grooms cake (both 6" rounds), 100 cupcakes (in 5 flavors) and 48 custom sugar cookies for a little over $400, which seems good to me. Especially since I was quoted between $650-895 for a tiered cake that would feed 85, not including the cutting/plating fee.

I agree with the cake as a better more classic look. I think of cup cakes for kids so both might be good if there are a lot of children planned to attend. It may also depend on if it is a formal wedding or one whose reception is very casual.
