Special Wedding Dances

Victoria, on June 8, 2021 at 11:26 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 6

Should you "practice" your first dance, father/daughter dance, and mother son dance prior to the reception?

Nobody in the group dances...ever, so I want everyone to be prepared but I don't want to to look rehearsed.

PS: I was hoping for my dad to be surprised with the song at the reception.

Unless you plan on doing anything more than the usual step and touch, I don't think practicing is necessary!

FH and I are taking dance lessons because we want to do a little more than stand and sway/spin, but other than that we won't be.

I've been to a few weddings where the bride/father and mother/groom did more complicated dances, but it really depends on your relationship. If you don't usually dance I wouldn't say its necessary.

My fiancé and I had never danced together (he doesn’t typically enjoy dancing) and we chose a song impossible to do the awkward sway/step to so dance lessons were a must. I will say, if lessons aren’t cost prohibitive for you, I’d highly recommend doing lessons. Learning the steps and the choreography together has been such a special, new kind of intimacy and fun for us.
For the father daughter dance, we’ve chosen a much simpler song and have danced together a few times so we’re just going to wing it.

Most people do the 9th grade sway and there is nothing wrong with it. Doesn’t require practice. If you aren’t all professional dancers, it will come across as forced if you are trying to remember steps instead of being in the moment.

We don't "Practice" persay, but when we have music playing throughout the house and our first dance song comes on we do stop and dance with each other just for fun but also subconsciously I think its relaxing us for when we have to do it in front of a whole bunch of people.

Practice the first dance if it is choreographed at all otherwise I don’t think rehearsing is necessary.
