Soup or appetizer?

Laura, on June 6, 2016 at 2:01 PM Posted in Planning 0 30

We are picking out menu options to taste in a few weeks and some of the soups sound delicious. We're doing a 3 course sit down dinner so I was thinking either soup, salad, entree or appetizer, salad, entree. Someone told me not to serve soup because it is difficult to serve and a little iffy to eat in such nice clothes. Does anyone have any thoughts/advice/experience with this? Wedding is late September in the mountains so it will be chilly.

Thanks!

I would say appetizer. That way people can walk around, socialize and still eat.

I would say appetizer would be better to serve.

A little concerned that most people can't eat soup without spilling it.

I prefer a soup, personally. Especially if you already have a cocktail hour with appetizers, if you serve another appetizer people will be full before the entree.

Had a beautiful artichoke bisque at my sisters wedding, and no one looked like this.

    I'd do an appetizer.

If you're having a cocktail hour with appetizers, I would go with soup since they'll already have their fill of apps.

Soup is hit or miss.... If someone does not like the flavor a lot may not be eaten. I think most people expect salads

Good question.. are you having other apps during the cocktail hour? That would make me pick soup. I guess it also depends on the rest of your menu choices.

Also curious what kind of soup? If there aren't many veggies with the entree, I would like a salad.

If you're having a cocktail hour w/ apps, do a soup.

    If not, do an appetizer.

I would choose an app since soup can be messy and it is easier to mingle with apps.

How warm do you expect it to be at your wedding (September is the warmest month here, but it can be fall other places). I don't really like soup when it's warm outside, unless it's a gazpacho.

I would prefer salad or app to soup personally. I've only really liked soup if I was sick or if it was freezing cold out. I do see it being potentially hazardous to people's outfits!

I like soup, myself, especially if it will be chilly out.

Always App over soup. Soup is also harder to ensure it's piping hot too.

Appetizers for sure. You have to worry about making sure the soup stays warm, it can get messy and it's not as easy to walk around with or socializing.

Salad > another app > soup.

I wouldn't say no to a little soup shooter app, but I will wind up looking like m's baby if it's a whole bowl.

If you have a cocktail hour will you be having appetizers? If so i would say soup, i think most guess would fill up on appetizers and then when your main dish comes won't be all that hungry.

I love soup i have it at least once a week and I even eat it in the summertime. However, I must have shaky hands or something cause I almost always spill a little bit down the front of my shirt. I'm okay with that at home but I would rather avoid foods I can spill on a nice dress.

Thanks for all the feedback! We are doing a cocktail hour with some light apps, and then a sit down dinner right after so no one will actually be walking around with the soup. It is in the mountains in upstate NY on a lake, so it will be pretty chilly. We are also doing salad as the second course. As much as I like soup I think you have all convinced me that appetizer will be easier. Thanks!
