Song ideas for Father Daughter/first Dance

Katrina, on May 29, 2018 at 1:25 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 10
I've decided to do my father daughter dance and first dance a little different: we're going to start out with the father daughter dance, and about half way through my fiance is going to ask to take over and then we'll have our first dance. We like this idea because 1. The symbolism. It shows another way of my dad handing me off to my husband and it's a special moment. 2. It cuts down on the 20 minutes of dances that no one ever watches (or at least no one watched at the weddings we attended last summer).

I need help figuring out a song that works for both dances. So nothing that works great for my dad and I, but sounds weird/creepy for my husband and I, and vice versa.

Our wedding is June 29th, so it's coming up quick, so the more suggestions we can get now the better.

Thank you so much ❤️

Hi Katrina! I love this idea! It could be tricky finding a song that would work for both instances, so do you think it would be possible to do a slight pause after the father-daughter dance to switch to a song for your first dance?

We thought about the pause to switch songs, but at that point we feel like it wouldn't flow well and it'd look more like we're trying to cut the father daughter dance short, which isn't what we're trying to do

FYI -- your DJ can definitely play shortened versions of any "dance" songs you choose, so it doesn't have to be 20 minutes of dances even if you use different songs. With abbreviated versions of your chosen songs, the special dances can easily be 1-2 minutes each. (But, you're right about multiple full-length dance songs.... We went to a wedding like that last year with 4 full-length songs, one after another and it was incredibly awkward to watch for that long.)

We still really like the idea of combining the dances because of the symbolism

I like the idea of combining the dances! I put a few suggestions below that might work for both?

A moment like this – Kelly Clarkson

Because You Loved Me – Celine Dion

I Got You Babe – Sonny & Cher

I like this idea, such a great sentiment. We're doing "what a wonderful world". I'll be doing the father/daughter dance after the bridal party introductions and first dance after cake cutting.

This is a strange idea....I’m not sure everyone will get it. I’m also not too sure it’ll be easy to find a song that covers “dad love” transitioning to “marriage love.”

But regardless, I’m dancing with my dad to George Strait’s “Love Without End, Amen,” which is a very nice song.

It's not supposed to be a song showing a transition from dad love to marriage love, because if it was then the message would be completely different. It's supposed to show that my dad loved me first and trusts my husband enough to give me to him, and show that they both love me.

If there are two separate songs that you like, perhaps your DJ could help transition between them? If not, I don't think a break in the song would be too bad. As a guest looking on, the message would be clear if at the end of the father daughter dance, your papa puts your hand in FH's hand and the second dance begins.

I'm thinking about Stevie Wonder's "Isn't she Lovely" for my father daughter dance. The message is a innocuous but the lyrics are too one-sided to use for the fist dance, imo. I just looked at the weddingwire list of Father-daughter suggestions. “What A Wonderful World” by Louis Armstrong could work for both. It's not directly about familial love or romantic love it's about being over-joyed which applies to both without being creepy at all, lololol.

Our father daughter dance is "God Only Knows" by the Beach Boys. It has a lot of sentimental value for my dad and I as we have both loved the Beach Boys for a long time. We once attended a private beach concert in Waikiki by them (John Stamos played the drums!) and Hawaii has a very special place for my dad and I. My dad ran into Mike Love, who is the lead singer of the BB on an airplane a couple weeks ago, and we will be meeting the band on July 4 at the Capitol where they give a concert. It just seemed meant to be. And the lyrics...."God only knows what I'd be without you"....I mean even typing that makes me emotional. It's an upbeat song but very sentimental, which I love. I would be a mess if we did something like "My Little Girl" by Tim McGraw or anything *really* father-daughter-y because I just love my Dad so much, he has supported me through everything. Someone send me a prayer for that moment on my wedding day because I am already crying, I will be a freakin' mess. Anyhow, for our first dance as a couple, we are going with "Dance Me to the End of Love" by the Civil Wars - it's a unique cover, I love that it's a duet with a male and female, and is easy to sway to. Our real "songs" are Hotel California and Drive By (by Train) and not really first dance material so we had to look elsewhere. I love the romantic tune of our song. Good luck!!!
