Something old, new, borrowed, and blue?

Maren, on September 5, 2018 at 8:05 AM Posted in Community Conversations 0 21

Are you including something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue in your wedding day?

This well-known tradition is popular for some, while others choose to skip it. Is having something old, new, borrowed, and blue an important tradition for you? And if so, what are your items for each?

Hi. Here is what I have chosen. My something old will be my mother's wedding rings on my bouquet. My something new will be the necklace my FH gave to me. My something borrowed is a loved one's gorgeous earrings. And klmy something blue will be my garter belt. I love this idea to bring your marriage luck. It is very sweet. And I know my parents did this and I would love to keep it going.

Yes, I did, and it turned out that some items qualified in more than one category.

old: my grandmom's engagement ring, which I wear every day. My cousin also lent me our grandmom's bracelet to wrap around my bouquet, as a surprise.

    new: wedding dress

borrowed: my mom's pearl bracelet, and also my grandmom's bracelet above

blue: My engagement ring and wedding band both have sapphires in them. Also, a photo charm of my same grandmom mentioned above was also attached to my bouquet, and she's wearing a blue sweater in the photo. I didn't realize the significance until after the wedding, but I still felt that it was a nice touch.

This non-traditional bride is really into this tradition. I was stressing it for a bit but have it all worked out now.
Old: I am wearing a necklace that was my Grandmothers (Mothers Mom)
New: My Shawl to keep me warm in November
Blue: Either adding a couple blue flowers to my bouquet or blue ribbon to hold it together to match the blue in my dress
Borrowed: I am borrowing a necklace from my Sister to include in the wrap for my bouquet. It was my Grandmothers (Dads Mom)

Something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue were important to me.

something old - my old ring my hubby gave me when we were on our first cruise to mexico

something new - pretty much everything i wore the day of the wedding lol - my dress, shoes, undergarments, garter, jewelry, veil, tiara

something borrowed - diamond bracelet from my cousin who was my MOH and who is happily married

something blue - we had a lot of blue in our wedding since one of the colors was blue. my garter had blue in it, my old ring had blue stone in it.

Love it, Lex! Hmm your something borrowed could be another accessory or momento coming from a friend or parent? Even a borrowed good-luck charm for the big day Smiley smile

I have the old, new, and blue part. What do I do for the borrowed? Do i ask someone for something or wait to be given something?

Hi Gabrielle Smiley smile Tricky question, but perhaps asking a close family/friend what they think about for the something borrowed item might give them some ideas of if they or if someone else might have something that would work for you?

Old: my mother's diamond which my parents had made into a pendant for me. Also, my grandmother's diamond filigree tennis bracelet

Borrowed: my great grandmother's pearl earrings and the diamond earring jackets my mother purchased to go with them

New: just about everything else I am wearing

Blue: an embroidered hanky that belonged to my grandmother (also another "old" item), and probably my toenails. My bouquet will also have a few blue thistles in it.

I haven't thought much about this. I'd like to look more into where this tradition originated from and why it's necessary

It's not that it was important to me but I thought it would be a fun tradition!

My something new can be my dress, my borrowed is my veil from one of my bridesmaids, and some old buttons from my great grandmother are going to double as my something old and blue. They're going to be pinned to the inside of my dress.

My best friend (Matron of Honor) got married this last October and we went dress shopping this last week for me and she announced she was giving me her veil! My girls are in blue (Oasis) dresses, does that count?? My dress is new....

Old and Blue: my great-grandmother's rosary is being wrapped into my bouquet, it's made of turquoise blue beads

Borrowed: several photos of beloved family members passed from my mother and MIL are being borrowed to copy and shrink to charm size; they will hang from the rosary on the bouquet

    New: my dress!

I am definitely excited about this tradition!

Old: My great-grandma’s pearl and diamond earrings.
New: Dress! Shoes! Veil! Basically my whole ensemble.
Borrowed: My grandma’s wedding band which is now my cousin’s. It’s Jewish custom to wear a wedding band from a successful marriage on your right ring finger along with your engagement ring during the ceremony.
Blue: I’ll be wearing Oscar de la Renta “Something Blue” perfume.

It’s also an English tradition (my dad grew up there) to have a “sixpence in your shoe” as the last part of this. I’ll be using the same coin which my grandmother gave my mom on my parents’ wedding day.
