Solder Rings???

~Bride 8/28/10~, on September 21, 2010 at 9:39 AM Posted in Planning 0 25

So when when we bought our wedding bands back in March the guy at Kay's recommended that I get my rings soldered together since I got a wrap. I am kinda torn because I don't really want to give up my rings for 3 weeks for them to send them out. But my only concern is they slide around my finger and hit quite often do you think it can damage the rings if I don't get them soldered? Just looking for opinions because if I have to give them up I want to do it soon so I can get them back asap! Your thoughts? TIA Smiley smile

Some Kay's have the jewelers on site. Now to answer your question, it may cause some minor nicks in the finish, but nothing that would void your warranty. I say do at and then go to Target or something like that and get a $20 ring for a couple weeks. I wasn't going to do it at first, but then the fact that the wedding ring kept spinning so the diamonds weren't showing was driving me nuts!

My cousin had her rings soldered together after she got married and they look really nice together like that. She said having them soldered together was one of the best choices she made. I have yet to pick out my wedding band yet, but assuming I can have mine soldered together I probably will do it.

Personally, I won't be getting my rings soldered together because 1) I have a solitare and don't need to and 2) when I have the wedding band, I will most likely wear it alone most days saving my e-ring for weekends and going out (just a personal thing, I'm not a big jewelry type of girl).

That said, if they are made to fit together and you plan on wearing both all the time, I say go for it. In the mean time, consider a replica ring (which may come in handy when you are traveling) so you'r hand doesn't feel "naked".

@Corinne - How long did your cousin have to wait to get it back?

@Future KH - My rings were meant to be togehter because the ring wraps around my engagement rings so it would look stupid to wear them separate...I have a ring that I can wear on that finger while its soldered...just having a hard time giving it up lol

I'm not sure, a couple weeks maybe? I'll ask her next time I talk to her, which will probably be today since we talk all the time on FB.

I had my e-ring and its wrap soldered together at Kays. I, too, wanted them separate from my band since I may not always wear both pieces. Anyway, I was without my ring for 12 days but it got easier after the first day or two. On a positive note, it was nice to have my e-ring cleaned and polished. It looked so great on my wedding day.

    @Corinne - Thank you!

@HeGivesMeButterflyz - So you did it before the ceremony? That's what I should have done. LOL

We're actually sending them off to be soldered BEFORE the wedding. So, on the wedding day I won't even have my engagement ring Smiley sad

I guess I'll have to go shopping for a "place holder" ring for the mean time! Smiley smile

@Danya - That is the smart way to do it! I should have gotten mine done before the wedding. I should have know that I would not want to part with it after the wedding! LOL Smiley smile

I'm not going to get my soldered cause I may not want to wear both all the time plus the e-ring is 14k gold and the wedding band is 18k gold. They need to be maintenanced quite differently.

I'm definately getting mine soldered. i wasn't sure at first, but after i talked to a lady at the shane company i decided it was a better idea. when you do wear your engagement ring and your wedding band together constantly it will cause damage to both rings over time. it will wear down the rhodium plating like you wouldn't believe and can actually cause your rings to become mishapen. if you weren't going to wear both all the time, i wouldn't worry about it. I NEVER take my engagement ring off unless i'm afraid it's going to fall off. it's a size five and my finger still gets really skinny when i'm cold. also spinning drives me seriously up the wall. I would go crazy if my band and e-ring weren't lined up at all times. lol.

@Jaime - Thats kinda what I thought that it would damage over time...I guess I will have to give up my ring for it to get soldered! Smiley sad But if it will help on the wear of it it will be worth it! Smiley smile

@Jaime What if my e-ring is 14k white gold and my wedding ring is 18k white gold? Doesn't that make a difference if you are going to solder them together?

My original e ring was going to have the enhancer band from kays and they recommended me to have them soldered and I was going to. but I changed my mind because I don't want to wear my ering at work and the enhancer band looks mega stupid alone so I ended up getting the original set from walmart that I wanted.

@ Jennifer - 18K is softer and would be more prone to damage. I would think that you could still have them soldered together though.
