So... are you having a garter??

I'm honestly horrified at the idea of FH fumbling around under my dress in front of all our guests... are they really necessary?? Are you having a garter? Anyone know the history/reason for them??

No, I don't really care for it one way or the other, but FW would be horrified if I suggested it lol. Not that she is a prude but she hates being the centre of attention, hates having all eyes on her, very shy. Sure the entire wedding eyes will be on her but the garter toss is so much worse. If I suggested that our families watch as she go fishing up my skirt for a garter, she would look at me like I've lost my mind.

Ok, im glad im not the only one wanting to skip it. I think ill go ahead with my gut and not do it at all! Smiley smile I'm not opposed to wearing one all night, but we can save that for later when both of our families are not surrounding us! Smiley winking

I didn't do that and I didn't wear a garter. I don't like the idea if them either. I just did the bouquet toss.

Nope! Not a fan of either toss tradition, and we don't have many single friends left. I will probably slip one on at the end of the night and pretend it was there all day. I don't think it looks very comfortable to actually wear all day.

I wore a tea-length dress and had the garter just above my knee -- so there was no "diving under the dress."

We had enough single women that blood was shed in the wrestling match that ensued when the bouquet was tossed!

We did it & it was actually pretty fun. We also did the bouquet toss as well. No pressure on anyone-those that wanted to participate did and others went and grabbed a drink. I moved it to my knee right before so DH only had to put his arm under my dress. It doesn't have to be scandalous-I would've killed him if he went head first! My sister's (MOH) boyfriend caught it...no accident that DH aimed it right at him! If you want it, go for it. If not, the sun will rise the day after your wedding.

I'm wearing one because I think it's beautiful, feminine and I just want to because I'll never have another excuse to wear one except for maybe on Halloween, but we will not be doing a garter toss.

No we are not. Originally we were going to do the garter toss and bouquet toss, but instead of it being for single people just all guys/girls there get up and we would give out a bottle of wine/liquor. However I haven't bought a garter and FH didn't love the idea of doing it anyways. So, I asked him again and he was fine with not doing it. I already have my toss bouquet, so we decided I would still throw the bouquet to all of the women out there and they will just be getting wine/liquor, something for themselves and the person with them.

I didn't really want to do it, and said so to my FH. He was very disappointed. He never had a big wedding, so never had the opportunity to do this tradition. (I did it at my first wedding.) So, for him, we are doing it.

We're not doing either a bouquet or garter toss. The garter thing has always seemed a little weird to me and if you're uncomfortable with it you should definitely skip it. I think I've only been to three weddings that had the garter toss. I didn't even know it was a thing for a while.

    Edited for clarity.

I was once at a wedding who did the garter toss, but before he actually removed the garter from under the brides HUGE ballgown, he pulled out a bunch of random stuff...like a rubber chicken, a frying pan, etc. It was hilarious! I dont know how they got all that stuff under her chair before they started the "event" but he wore the garter on his arm and threw the rubber chicken! Sooo funny!

We weren't planning on doing the garter or bouquet toss..... BUT reading your post just reminded me that my MOH got me a garter set as a gift as soon as I was engaged. Now we need to rethink this. I guess I could wear one and have FH take it off me in a private moment between the church and hall..... I doubt it will last all night.

I'm wearing one but we're not doing a garter toss. We are doing a bouquet toss tho because I remember as a kid that was my favorite part of a reception, I've always wanted to toss my bouquet

We will be doing one. A dear friend of mine got married almost two years ago and the best man (Brother of the bride) caught the garter and the Mom of both the groom and best man caught the bouquet. They did a reverse method of putting it back on. The mom actually put it on her sons leg.
