So... are you having a garter??

I'm honestly horrified at the idea of FH fumbling around under my dress in front of all our guests... are they really necessary?? Are you having a garter? Anyone know the history/reason for them??

I will be wearing a garter. I like the idea. I did ask FH was he comfortable with it and he said yes!

I ordered a 2-pack (one to keep, one to throw) because he had said "oh this is Butte, so traditional, guess we better" and then when it arrived he agreed that it's kind of silly, why were we???? HAHA! So now I guess since I have it, we will just play it by ear on the crowd, etc....

I'll be wearing one, (since we got it for free from the bridal shop), but will not be tossing it. How long I wear it will depend on how itchy or bothersome it is. We are also going to do a variation on the bouquet toss, giving it to the longest married couple, as we will not have many single people at our wedding.

Haven't read all the comments but... hellll to the no. The idea of having FH dig up my skirt in front of our families, and then tossing a piece of my lingerie to a bunch of men, sounds... unpleasant.

Nope. The idea of my FH hands up my dress in front of 200 people is totally creepy. Plus I want to be as comfortable as possible that day. A rough piece of fabric chaffing my legs is not cute. Skipping the bouquet toss too...I'd rather spend that time on the dance floor rather than do something just for the sake of tradition.

It's one of FH's few requirements. I hate the idea but it's one of maybe three things he's asked for. I didn't read the comments, but the reason I've read multiple times: back in the good ole days, people would accompany the couple to make sure the marriage was consummated. They would grab pieces of the brides clothes to assist the groom and it was considered good luck. As time went buy, people decided this was creepy (um duh) and so people weren't allowed in the room. They were then outside the chamber and a piece of clothing would be tossed to the group waiting. It eventually moved away from all of that...
