Snacks after dinner?

OregonEmily, on June 4, 2014 at 6:10 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 25

I don't want guests to get hungry after dinner is over and put away. I think it's especially important with people drinking. Are you leaving your buffet open so people can go back for food? I'm worried it would get dried out and nasty.

I was considering having some simple, dry snacks available after dinner. Peanut butter filled pretzels, trail mix and asian mix (wasabi peas, rice crackers, sea weed). And leave some paper food boats for guests to put the snacks in. (see photo)

I don't want to go fancy or high-maintenance food. This is for a very casual, outdoor wedding.

What do you think? Too weird?

I think snacks are a great idea! We are doing a slider station at the end of ours with burgers and fries, even though the reception isn't that long. We figure a lot of times people don't even eat that much when the food is out the first time bc everyone is talking and getting settled...but they might like some handheld food at the end of the night (esp after some drinks!)

We are going to have chips, pretzels, popcorn, goldfish, and cookies (from the grocery) out all night after the buffet is over. I have been to many wedding where I was STARVING after the buffet from dancing and I do not want our guests to get peckish.

@GrayCat- How are you handling the serving of your snacks? Open bowls with scoops? And what will the guests put them in? It seems like bowls are too big. I'm not completely satisfied with my "food boat" idea.

@OregonEmily: They had these big, white plastic bowls at Dollar Tree the other day so I thought I could use those with scoops and tongs for the cookies. I got a bunch of clear plastic plates to use, but really I like your boat idea better because they can be carried easier with less risk of spilling.

I think light snacks are a good idea if the reception is going to be late or if there's a lot of heavy drinkers.

I used to work as a cook at a golf course that hosted weddings. We offered a "midnight" buffet of veggies, fruit, cheese, desserts, etc. but we always had SO much return to the kitchen uneaten. I don't know if it was just poor portion control on our part, or if people just weren't hungry. So definitely doing something cheap and cheerful is a good option.

We are doing pizza, chips, dips, and mini hot dogs for late night snacks. We know our guests will be hungry and want to eat.

We had late night smokies with toppings plus a fruit tray. They were a huge hit!

I love snacks. I'd eat them even if I were full from the dinner!

We're having a late night hot dog station. It's going to be so awesome to see tuxedoed and gloved waitstaff serving people Chicago style dogs.

Great idea! I agree, the buffet food will get gross. How about little paper cones instead of food boats?

Omg so streaking this idea. I am always staving at a wedding. I remember one wedding that the food was cold when it was supposed to be hot also small portions. So now I will add this to my budget. Mmmmm food....

Yes, I would definitely go with some snacks after dinner! Especially when people are drinking and dancing, they get hungry - at least I know I do lol. It's good to have food to soak up the alcohol, especially greasy food. We're going to have pizza served after dinner, as well as chips.

I like the idea! i'm not doing it though because after dinner not only will there be cake, but a whole viennese display with a chocolate fountain so the people who still want to eat/are hungry can fill up on dessert and sweets Smiley winking

We have changed from serving pulled pork sammies to meatballs now. Who knows if we will end up changing it again... I love your food boats!

My venue (owned by a chef) actually includes "bar food" an hour or two after dinner for guests to snack on ... caesar salad, sliders, chicken wings, french fries, and something I'm forgetting. I AM SO STOKED. I think snacks are a fantastic idea and I'm sure people will LOVE them.

We have an old friend who owns a GIANT chip truck. So the late night snack will be all you can eat fries, poutine, hotdogs.

He really stepped up for us. The best part is no set up or tear down, no serving, no need for additional plates, cutlery, napkins, condiments etc.

Just head outside and stuff your face.
