Smoking Area Ideas

Chrissy, on August 21, 2015 at 8:25 AM Posted in Planning 0 13

For those who don't know, my wedding is in my backyard. I am trying to figure out a smoking section. I was planning on putting up a separate canopy if it rains but it doesn't look like its going to and I don't want my canopy to smell like smoke. I do not want people smoking under the rented tent. So would you guys let people smoke near the fire pit that I am having or would non smokers get annoyed? Also, if there is a designated smoking area, what would you put in it? A sign and a bucket of sand? Would you have your DJ tell the guests to utilize the smoking area? Anyone who has created their own smoking area, I would really appreciate you explaining to me how you did it. Thanks ladies! 15 days!!

We aren't allowed to have anyone smoke on the terraces, so we have to tell people they have to go downstairs & outside. But we are creating a little seating area for them cause if there are people there, they will talk and be able to relax still.

As a nonsmoker IMO- I hate when people smoke near me. I just do not like to be around cigarettes. I would put a cute little sign, maybe a couple chairs or a bench.

I'm not a smoker either and while it bothers me, I am trying to be respectful. But I have never had to stand in a smoking area so I've never really paid attention to one lol. I totally didn't think of chairs. Thanks for the idea.

Chrissy it's very sweet of you to think of smokers even though you yourself do not. An area somewhat, but not totally, away from everyone with a bucket or two of sand, and a sign saying "Smoking Area" would be fine. Chairs would be nice too. I completely understand not wanting them under the tent.

Never even thought about this. I don't even think my venue allows smoking anywhere on the premises, I'll have to ask. Great post!

I don't know many smokers, but the ones I do know, know to go off to the side where they won't bother anyone. So I don't think you will need to do anything. They should be respectful enough to know to find a secluded place off to the side. If they aren't, well, they are butt holes. Lol.

My smokers will need to go downstairs outside to smoke.

Thanks guys! I definitely need somewhere for them to put cigarette butts because my dog will be there and will probably eat them if they are on the ground. I'm going put a sign near the bucket expressing that its concerns for animals (but seriously that pisses me off that people throw butts on the ground as if that doesn't count as littering). I really appreciate your feedback.

ETA: I like the smokers pit idea!

How about the front yard? As far away from your other guests as possible. Anything burning triggers my asthma. As soon as your fire pit is lit, I'd have to leave. My Mom is even worse. She had to leave my cousin's outdoor wedding pretty early, as not being able to breathe is not an option.

My FH and I are both currently smokers... (hopefully going to get back on the wagon and quit soon) anyway, as a smoker, I'd say that the fire pit idea is splendid. Most respectful smokers will step away unless their assholes. I also try to figure out which way is down wind so my smoke doesn't blow towards people.

We had a few smokers, and I put two plastic Adirondack chairs in a corner of the yard, away from the tent and the fire, with a small bucket of sand. I didn't sign it, but people got the hint.

Yes it will be a bonfire type setting. I think I will have a designated smoking area but if they light up around the fire, I wont yell at them Smiley winking.

That makes me feel better @Cats. I don't want to have to say something to someone that doesn't understand where to smoke.

I went to a backyard wedding once where they had the smokers go to the front of the house near the driveway by the garage and there was bucket of sand. They put a sign that said, "Light Up Here" and they hung christmas lights above it. They had the dj announce at the beginning of the cocktail hour that there was a smoking section in the front of the house and the bride's family (they were hosting) would appreciate it if people used it.

As somebody who smokes ( I hate it and will be quitting after we get married, I just don't want to gain the weight before, or be a bitch) I think that the smoker's pit would be nice. However, I also just try and wait it out at somebody's party. I know you can't ask everybody to do that though.
