What do you currently have planned? What type of venue? Do you have food and beverages? How many people?

If its really small and most of your guests know each other, food, drinks, and some background music is all that is needed to encourage socializing. If you have guests who don't know other guests, it could be awkward to just have those things available, and I would have some games or other "activities" available to help people break the ice.
