Small ceremony now, big reception 2021 - double tux rental?

Corinne, on July 6, 2020 at 8:05 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 15

Hi all!

My fiance and I are planning to have a small ceremony on our original date of October 24, 2020, and postpone the reception for all our guests to fall of 2021. For our small ceremony, it will be immediate family as well as our bridesmaids / groomsmen. My girls and I already have our dresses, but we're a little lost on what to do with the groomsmen and groom. Do they have to rent a tux twice? Do they find cheap suits to buy? Do they wear whatever they want for one event, and then rent for another? I figured I'd come here since I'm seeing more and more people doing this plan! We want to have a photographer for both events and will be live streaming the ceremony this year to all our guests.

Any thoughts, suggestions, recommendations, or "we did this!" comments welcome!

Thank you!

My friend just got married with their immediate family and bridal party. They are having a big wedding in October if they can. The bride wore a short white dress, my friend (the groom) wore dress pants, shirt and tie. The bridal party didn't wear their outfits. They are waiting for the actual wedding to wear all of their attire. I would be worried about accidentally ruining the attire prior to the biggest wedding. I definitely wouldn't have the guys rent tuxes or suits twice. That would be way too expensive.

Thanks so much for the advice! We were briefly searching for suits / tuxes earlier once we realized this and HOLY MOLEY they're so expensive!

They are very expensive to have to rent twice. Are you doing a ceremony at the larger wedding? If so that's when I would have everyone dress up.

My dad and brother bought their suits instead of renting them, so they'll be wearing theirs twice, my fiancé is renting his tux twice (because that'll be ~$290 total instead of $600). I told even everyone else that they could wear any suit they want this year, and they'll rent the ones we picked next year. I decided to have them rent the suits next year because we'll be able to take pictures with more people, so I figured it made sense to have the more staged stuff then. Everyone is getting boutonieres/flowers this year, so that will hopefully make them look more cohesive, or at least more formal, in our 2020 pictures.

We are doing the same thing as you. Ceremony this year and reception next year. Since we are doing the reception next year we decided to save the nice stuff till the party and are doing something more casual this year ! Maybe they can just look nice this year

I am renting the nice stuff for our church ceremony this year as we will be having our formal pictures done at the church. Our bridal party can wear what they want for the reception next year and FH will rent his tux for both as I will wear my dress both times. We will also be live streaming our ceremony and not doing a ceremony next year.

My husband got a custom suit from Indochino and had a great experience. The quality is great and the cost wasn’t bad. Their suits start at $300 but they regularly have sales. Since they’re custom you also don’t have any alteration cost.

We are having them wear their rented suits for the small ceremony. Our big reception will be more causal, so they will be able to wear what they want. We may give them parameters or something like that.

We're not sure if we're going to do a vow renewal or just a reception next year, but we're thinking to rent them next year since we'll most likely be wearing masks and in the backyard for this year's ceremony.

Thanks for the info, this actually sounds like a good plan for us as well! What will your bridesmaids be wearing? Mine already have them, I figured I'd ask if they wanted to wear them or not and then go from there.

Thanks for the advice! I figured with the likelihood of masks this year, we can save the rentals for next year to get the traditional "wedding pictures" with everybody looking as snazzy as possible.

Thanks for the advice! Since we JUST made the decision, we're debating whether to do a backyard vs. church wedding. I figure once we decide that, we can choose which event gets the formal attire.

Good to know! I had seen them as a sponsored post in my searching last night, I'll have to look into the site a little closer, thanks!

We were thinking the same for whichever event they're NOT renting, something along the lines of "nice navy suit of your choosing" and hope they look cohesive enough.

Two of my three bridespeople are my brothers, so there's actually only one wearing a dress, and I said it was up to her whether she wanted to wear the dress this year, next year or both times. She is going to wear the dress this year. She's also expecting a baby before the 2021 reception, and she knows the dress fits now so it definitely made sense for her to wear the dress this year.
