Slight Roadbump with our Marriage License application...

Mrs.a, on August 10, 2020 at 3:40 PM Posted in Planning 0 10

So our county states that marriage licenses are valid 60 days after your date of application, so we opted to apply online on day 59 just be safe. Well low and behold we have to have a video conference interview with the clerk which has been scheduled for September 14th, it’s more than a month away...

Not a big deal except we were hoping to plan to elope sooner if possible. However when I called the Marriage office, they’re closed and won’t be reopening until August 31st. 😭

What to do???

Eloping is a ceremony. Filing the license and getting it notarized is different. I would save the legal piece for tax, health care purposes. You can have an elopement ceremony without the marriage license piece.

Truthfully I may not file mine until after the honeymoon if it affects name change because I purchased with my maiden name. Then again that may have nothing to do with that. lol

Yeah. I mean just have the officiant file the day of the October ceremony and do a symbolic ceremony no marriage license to be filed sooner. Check with the officiant but I am sure that would be ok.

Does your state require you to get the marriage license in the same county you plan to get married in? If not, you might be able to get one sooner in a different county. Also in some states there's a waiting period after your appointment but before you receive the marriage license, which can be waived by a court for a small fee. If you're able to figure out which court handles the waivers, you may be able to get them to help you with this situation. I'd also recommend calling/emailing the county office/wherever you applied for your license and explain your situation. They may be able to put you on a waiting list, so you'd be able to get an earlier appointment if someone else cancels.
