Silk tulle or regular tulle veil?

Amanda, on January 8, 2012 at 5:21 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 11

I can't decide! Ladies, do you think it's worth it for me to go with a the silk tulle cathedral veil or regular tulle cathedral veil?

Silk tulle is much more expensive than polyester tulle. I think your investment depends on whether or not you want to keep this veil as a family heirloom.

Here's my veil. The tulle is silk from my mother's veil, and the lace is also silk from my grandmother's veil. If other of those veils had been a poly or a blend instead of pure silk, they would have disintegrated by now. Silk is incredibly durable, especially if stored properly, and can be washed and restored in 80 years if your granddaughter wants to wear it.

Just to give you an idea.....the seamstress who restored my veil, said that if she purchased the amount of silk tulle I already had from my mother's veil, it would have been around $350-500 for the material alone.

    Hope that helps!

I don't think silk tulle is worth the extra expense, as long as you use a high-quality poly tulle with a good hand (don't go to Hobby Lobby).

Also I think my length is chapel...?.....around 108 inches or so. Is cathedral longer? I can never keep those two terms straight.

If your veil would be longer than mine, you would need more fabric and it would be more expensive.

Kris, that veil is gorgeous! And how special it is that your grandmother and mother both contributed from their own veils! Smiley smile

I do believe that is cathedral.

@Jen P, thanks!!! I never imagined myself in such a long veil (I'm only 4'11" so honestly I'm afraid it might look silly) but when my mom hunted for her veil in the basement last summer, she randomly found my Oma's box of wedding treasures stacked under a bunch of crap. It felt like she wanted to come to my wedding. Smiley smile I didn't cry when I bought my dress, but I cry every time I've tried on the veil.

But, I'm a huge sentimental sap like that. Smiley smile

Why don't you cut it in half and I'll take one side, you get the other? length problem solved! ;D

hehe kidding, that's so sweet! I wouldn't want anything from any of my mom's 3 wedding lol!

Haha Jen! Well.....if your mom's been married 3 times maybe she has more stuff for you to choose from? So you might have lots of options if you want an heirloom. Smiley smile

FWIW my parents are divorced but I had no problem using her veil. I feel like it gives me her energy, it doesn't remind me at all of their marriage ironically enough. Plus- my grandparents were married 60 years, so even if I was superstitious I think that would cancel out the divorce. At least that makes sense in my head. Smiley smile

I went with silk tulle! Can't wait to get it! It's an extra long cathedral silk tulle veil- mantilla cut with no trim and 144inches long!
