Signature Drink Ideas..DW/ Manhattan drink?

Colleen, on December 2, 2015 at 1:15 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 14

We are having top shelf liquor for our guests and with that we just found out we can do a signature drink, as long as we have the alcohol which we will. So we are thinking of doing a Manhattan (whiskey, sweet vermouth and bitters) since we met, work and got engaged in NYC (live in CT). Thought it would be cute to do this with a cute poem about our romance in Manhattan but this is a beach wedding in April....Does it really go?

A) Would you drink this (especially at a beach wedding)?

B) If not could you suggest another cocktail? I'm thinking my fav. Tequila sunrise

C) If you like the Manhattan idea thoughts on a cute poem?

I wouldn't drink it and I can't think of anytime I have been out with friends where they have ordered one. In all honesty, if you are choosing a signature drink it should be one that appeals to the masses rather than one that has to do with your romance story.

I like tequila sunrises but they are kinda sweet.

I like whiskey and bourbon, but not Manhattans. The only person I can think of that does like them is my late grandmother, but YMMV.

Tequila Sunrise would be appropriate for a beach wedding; margaritas would be fun, too. There are a lot of tropical cocktails that would be perfect for a beach wedding; you can tweak the recipes a little and come up with your own cute names for them, too.

I would do something that more people drink. I wouldn't drink one, regardless if it was a beach wedding.

I love Manhattan's. I drink them often. High-quality vermouth is a must. My concern is that it's a very strong drink to serve as your signature.

I think a Manhattan is a very certain taste and as others have said, you want something to appeal to the masses. I would say a vodka based drink, like maybe a John Daly or Dirty Shirley?

Thank you ladies! Enough answers for me. I will convince my FH to go for a more tropical drink. Personally i don't really like Manhattan's either and don't see everyone enjoying them. I will screenshot this conv. for him haha.

It's a cute idea, but I wouldn't drink a Manhattan. If you two like them then go for it, but if you're just doing it because of the story then I'd pass.

What about a "Big Apple" Martini? More beachy.

How about some variation on a cosmo? You could make it more "tropical" but still have that throw back to New York, if you'd like.

OMG, we love Manhattans. The Red Rooster, in Harlem makes one with a nutmeg infused bourbon.....ahhhhhh....

I would do two sigs; that one and a more beachy one. One of my recent weddings did a vanilla moscow mule and a bellini type thing with blue Aliza and prosecco. I've actually had a few weddings with Manhattans or Negronis as sig drinks. Hipster. Love it.

I'm a bartender and I would say don't do it. Probably a lot of people will order a Manhattan that don't realize how strong it is, then it'll go undrank. It'll be a lot wasted $$, it's also very strong and if people have 2 they'll be really drunk. I wouldn't do it for a signature drink.

I think you have to know your crowd. If your friends are mostly hipster urban types, it would work - or maybe do a twist on a Manhattan by putting it in a highball with soda water so it's less potent. I personally love Manhattans but understand that many don't.

Great ideas ladies! I agree Manhattan's are a really strong drink considering I have my venue until midnight I don't want my hipster friends passing out early haha. The reason I asked is I was doubtful to do this drink and I think most side with me on this, it's just FH loves Manhattans but he can't win them all : )

@ Staci @Jeanne - Thank you I like the "Big Apple" martini idea a lot and/or cosmo NY style.

@ Celia- I'll have to look into the other drinks you mentioned and see if we can have two signature drinks. Nutmeg infused bourbon sounds like a great drink for the holidays! I'll have to make my way to Harlem.
