Should vendors put out business cards?

Daniella, on September 28, 2019 at 3:03 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 26
My bartender asked if they can put their cards out and I'm not sure how I feel about it. I get it's good advertising for them, but the day is about me and my groom, not them. Thoughts?

I feel like it's weird to put them out. If someone is interesting in their services they can just ask them for a business card.

I personally don't see a problem with it. If they were completely trying to promote themselves with a huge sign, that's a no from me. I would let them give out cards if they were asked but not like 50 cards to distract from decoration (that would be tacky). I don't mind spreading the love to businesses.

I'm okay with them handing them out to guests inquiring but don't know how I feel about then being left out on the bar.

I wouldn't be ok with it unless they offered some kind of incentive for helping them advertise aha

I can agree with that, maybe one card just to let people know who they are? I'm hiring a work friend of mine for his small business and I just love what he does for people. If it was anyone else, I'd probably turn it down.

I feel like it's ok just to have them out, rather than handing them out at the end of the night or something. Plus, unless they're truly outstanding, who is really going to honestly pay attention or ask for a card from a bartending service? I'm sure the focus will still be on you rather than one of like 10 vendors.

I personally would be more than happy to have them do that, I'm all for supporting people's livelihoods! It's not like they're passing them out and being blatant about it, they're just there if someone else happens to be like "hmm I need a bartender too, I wonder who they used?" It might actually save you some work if a friend does want to use them down the road - otherwise you would need to go to the trouble of trying to find their info! I would just clarify with them that you're fine with having them out as long as they're not outwardly advertising their services during your event.

I was at a wedding last night and the photographer had business cards on the tables. I thought it was a bit tacky. Your wedding is not the place for them to advertise their business. If a guest is truly that impressed to want to hire them, they will seek out their information.

I don’t think they should have it out. If someone is interested in their service they can just ask for it but a wedding is not a place to advertise.

I think that’s tacky. If someone thinks one of your vendors is doing a great job they can get the information from you. I would say no.

This feels tacky to me, but if the bar had one of those tiny holders with cards in it that wouldn't bother me. I'm not sure why exactly one bothers me and the other doesn't..

The Inn where we had ours had a small lecturn size and height table they put in the entryway, standard at their place, with a row of holders for business cards of vendors who contributed to the wedding. Anyone stopping at the coatroom, or passing to the restrooms,or leaving, would see it. It seemed a good compromise. Not in either cocktail, table dancing or bar areas, which I would not have wanted.

I find that very strange. I get that they’re a business but their focus shouldn’t be securing the next gig. If they provide excellent service and your guests are interested in hiring them, they could ask you after the wedding.

Very good point! I mean if it's someone we hired not someone who came with then venue ( like part of the package) I guess I would be okay with them having a few out on the bar, especially if they are fun and doing a great job, I wouldn't mind. I would think if they were doing a crappy job no one would take the cards.
