Should the cake match the linens or my dress?

Tricia, on January 28, 2011 at 11:22 AM Posted in Planning 0 17

I never ever stopped to think about the linens at the reception hall not matching my dress. My dress is ivory, but the linens the reception hall supply are white. I really don't feel like spending a couple hundred dollars to buy or rent linens (I have 25 tables). Do you think this is a problem?

Also, should my cake match the linens or my dress? I'm just doing a small tied cake (something like the picture below).

Thanks ladies!

I would have accents of your colors on the cake.

I plan on having an ivory dress and will be having white linens with nave blue napkins (free), for our cake I was going to have it white but look like freshly fallen snow (winter wedding) and will prob have navy ble ribbon around the bottom of each tier. Pretty much like your picture but sparkly.

I think you can do whatever.... our baker for the cake did tell us that she will make the cake match my dress (as far as ivory or white) but at then end of the day it doesn't really matter.

It's totally up to you. Either way will look nice. I know they can make ivory frosting so if you wanted it to match your dress, then just have them make the frosting ivory.

The BM dresses are cobalt blue so we are planning on using cobalt blue ribbon around the bottom of each tier. On the top we are thinking about putting flowers and an Eiffel Tower topper since we are doing a travel themed wedding. Maybe I'll look into doing cobalt blue napkins to add a pop of color.

Yikes, I read that one incorrectly. My frosting will be ivory, but my dress is champagne. However, the cake will be accented with fall..leaves, acorns, etc.

Did you talk to your hall? They usually offer white -or- ivory as the free linens, you sure that isn't an option? One of the reasons they say to do ivory linens is so that your dress won't look dirty/yellow/discolored next to the tables when you take pictures. If you are worried about that, maybe just rent one tablecloth for the cake table and or head table.

I would have the cake white, since it will be sitting on your table cloth all night, not your dress Smiley smile I really don't think anyone is going to care if you do not match every bit of your decor.

My dress will be Ivory, and our linens are Champagne, Chocolate Brown, and Burnt Orange. The cake incorporates all the colors!!

We did an ivory cake that was dusted with edible shimmer dust. It then had an accent ribbon around the bottom. I think that you should do what your heart desires!

What about buying one table cloth for the cake table in one of the main wedding colors- blue or whatever? Or even silver/gold? Then it you don't have to worry about it clashing with the rest of the decor. A white or ivory cake would fit in just fine.

The more coordinated your design & colors, the better. Otherwise it looks unproferssional & ill thought out. Not that you have to be matchy-matchy, but considered. Any yes, most halls will offer white and ivory linens at the same price, but as for matching your dress - I wouldn't worry about that. THere are just too many shades of white/diamond/ivory/buff/ecru/cream/antique/candlelight to even try!

My cake is purple. So you could be non traditional and not have a white or ivory cake.
