Should I still go wedding dress shopping if im losing weight?

Danielle, on November 13, 2013 at 2:28 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 21

I had a baby in August and have 10 lbs to go until im back to my pre pregnancy weight. Should I go dress shopping now or wait a little longer? Im hoping to drop at least another dress size for the wedding (next sept). Should i be going and buying a 6 when im planning on being a 2?

No, you have more than enough time to wait and not have to pay a hefty amount for alterations. Plus what looks good on you now may not be the style that will look best on you once you have lost more weight. Just be patient Smiley smile

You can go whenever you want!!! Any good dress shop will tell you it's a lot easier to take a gown in than let it out. They also encourage you to order your dress at least 10 months before the wedding to leave enough time for alterations.

You're the bride do what you want and have fun!!!

I would at least start looking. My dress took six months to come in. You'll want to allow enough time for alterations. I think I ordered mine 8 months out, which gave me a solid two months for any changes. It also took me around two months to finally decide on a dress.

Start looking - doesn't mean you have to buy right away. Just remember, most shops will offer a discount if you buy the first day in, so maybe browse for now. If its just 10 lbs and you buy a corset style dress you would order a size down from where you are at now and shouldn't have to have any alterations done, because you can work with the corset.

Totally up to you! I know its a confidence thing too, if you lose the 10lbs first you will have more fun trying everything on because you are confident in yourself. I had the same ideas and it makes a world of difference how the dresses fit.

I just had a baby in August also and am currently getting back to where I feel healthy & comfortable with my body. Only 5 more pounds to go! That being said, I bought my dress in October & I talked to my consultant about losing weight and she told me alterations can be made as long as I don't plan on losing (or gaining) more than 17lbs, after that you need a whole new dress size. Also, not sure where you plan on shopping for dress, but I learned real quick that wedding dress sizes are much different than "street" clothes. I wear a size 4 in pants & my dress was ordered in a size 12!

@courtney...WHAT?!? that is such a huge leap!! Im having anxiety just putting on my fat pants to go to work in. If i have to buy a double digit size ill probably get depressed and leave the store lol I really want to go and try on dresses tho!

I wouldn't advise shopping until the new year. That will give you a bit more time and enough time to look and to order.

Don't let the size of the dress bother you! No one is going to know the size except you & the bridal store, unless you choose to tell other people. Also, I have heard tons of girls on WW and IRL, say that their pant size in every day life was no where near the size of their wedding dress. Focus on being healthy and not a specific size!

If you *want* to go, then feel free to look around and see what styles you like.

If you don't want to try on dresses right now, you can wait at about 6mo before your wedding date.

I would at least start looking, but I would order in at least 2-3 months. Don't be startled at bridal sizes either. I am a 4 regularly and took an 8 in my gown.

Just make sure you order your dress 8 months in advance. Most will take about 6 months to order and then you have to think about some alterations that need to be done. I'd start looking, but you don't have to commit to anything until about January.

Go whenever. I went already even though there's a chance I might lose a dress size. You don't know how long it'll take you to find the dress you want, and dresses can take months to come in after you order them.

What does "come in" mean? Im not particularly girlie but ive watched say yes to the dress. Do they have like one huge dress and then clip it to form fit you or something? and then when you find the dress you want they measure you and order that dress? is that how it works? Ugh so much more difficult than i even imagined

Danielle - when you order a dress the shop will order it from the designer (their warehouse)...it takes anywhere from 3 to 6 months to "come in" to the shop to be picked up

To take in a dress is alter it to make it smaller in size...

Go shopping have fun and see what you like Smiley smile

You should at least start shopping around..we have very close wedding dates and I ordered my dress at the end of September and it won't be in until April (5 months before the wedding!) so I wouldn't wait too much longer..I would def order your dress before January!

Yea. You try on sample dresses in the store, they take your measurements when you decide to order the dress & then the order is placed. And I think it depends on the shop & designer as far as when it will arrive at the store. I went to a private bridal salon, my dress is a Casablanca & they told me it will be 6 months before it arrives. And then they told 2-3 months before the wedding, to schedule my alterations.

:sigh: so you cant just pick the dress you want from the shop and have them alter it?? It must be "ordered"?

I'd wait. I bought a size 12 in December and ended up buying a new dress in my new size 38 days before my wedding. Not worth it. You don't have to buy a dress right now, so I wouldn't.
